Driving through Mazatlan

We head south next week en route to Guayabitos Nayarit. Last March on the drive north on the road through Mazatlan there was a bad section where the road was dug up for some construction with a resultant traffic free for all.

Is there still a problem? Any suggestions on how to avoid the area or should we go via Cancun?!

Thanks for any advice.

Can you be a little more explicit on where your trip originates....you're coming down from Canada?

From Calgary, Alberta we take Interstate 15 through Montana, Idaho and Utah to Las Vegas, then #93 etc. to Phoenix and on to Tucson and Nogales AZ where we cross into Mexico. Then Mex 15 to Tepic which goes through Mazatlan.

Coming north last March there was a big construction project in Mazatlan and the traffic at that point was a free for all!

Is it finished yet? Any suggestions if the road is still dug up?

thanks.

Many thanks- will study the suggestions with a map we have.

( Wondering if the easiest way to get to the other side of town was to be born there!)

One suggestion. If possible try to time things so you go through Mazatlan either very early in the morning or just after the rush hour traffic time in the morning. For reasons that I've never been able to figure out, the traffic in the area you'll be traveling through is far more busy in the afternoons. In fact as a general rule that applies to just about every metropolitan area of Mexico.

"For reasons that I've never been able to figure out, the traffic in the area you'll be traveling through is far more busy in the afternoons." It's all the people coming from/going to the airport, lol; mainly it's folks heading off to or from their Siesta! ;) :)

surfnturf based on some of the more interesting "driving" I've seen about that time of day....some people seem to have started their Siesta while still at the wheel. ;^)))
