a must see or don't bother?

If you had to give me one "must see/do" and one "don't bother" things to do in Mazatlan, what would they be? Looking forward to 7 days of sun and sand. Enjoy old architecture, beach, exploring ruins, cheap souvineer flea markets....four adults 40+ end of January 2012.

DON'T: stay in your resort on an AI program and lay around all day in a beach chair and sit in the resort bar in the evening. (the reason I say that is becasue I have known several people who have come to Mazatlan and did just that).

DO: Get out and enjoy the sights, smell, tastes, touch, and yes, even the noise of Mazatlan. There is so much to see and do.

DO go to the Plaza Machado on a Friday or Saturday evening for dinner and/or drinks.

DON'T bother with Stone Island if your trip is short.

I second Plaza Machado on a Friday or Saturday evening as a must do. We save that for our last night when we travel to Mazatlan.

Since you want to have time on the beach for the sun, Stone Island should be on your list of possibilities. Firstly it's an easy place to visit for an afternoon, and has some nice restajurants right on the sand. Secondly it's the subject of a huge development that would eventually turn it into another Golden Zone, so this is a case of seeing it before it's possibly gone.

Lastly if you're there in February it's very possible you'll have some rather windy days with the winds coming from the North / Northwest. That will make the beaches and pools in the Golden Zone very chilly to lay out. Whereas Stone Island faces way around to the South almost to the Southest. North winds there are somewhat blocked off, and the temperature difference on the sand from the Golden Zone can be remarkably warmer.

Do two things while you're there that are not available anywhere else in Mazatlan. Have a local taxi take you on a tour of the area....it really is a lot like stepping back in time to the 1930's or 40's. Secondly do not miss the chance to ride on the ATV you can rent there. You cannot drive on the beach in Mazatlan proper.

ATV's on the sand are an absolute blast and within a minute you'll be away from the only develped area, and riding between the water and the coconut plantations on the other side of the sand. It's about 300 pesos a person per hour, which is plenty of time for the average person. I promise the experience will be very memorable.
