One Day in Puerto Vallarta - With Young Kids

We are coming to Puerto Vallarta for one day in March, 2010 (off of one of the cruise ships). We are in port from 8:00 am until 10:00 pm.

We have four kids, ages 6 and younger. They normally like the beach and learning about new cultures. None of us are really into shopping. We would like them to possibly have a bit of beach time but also, ideally, see a bit of "real" Mexico. Any ideas ??

Thanks,

Take a cab into Bucerias, about 20 min - 1/2 hour north of the Marina from where the cruise ships dock. Should be $20 or so. Walk the beach in front of the restaurants, have a beer and lunch, maybe some beach toys from the Walmart before you grab a cab? there is a flea-market to browse through. Bus is available, but with four kids under 6.......I'd do the cab. It's not really the 'real' Mexico as a lot of snowbirds live there, but easy and close to do. Go to the Bucerias for more info Bucerias.

Another great spot that should interest both you and the kinds is Sayulita. A quaint Mexican village on the beach. Great beach, surf and many things to see and explore.

I suggest for starters the statues and the sand sculptures on the Malecon. The sand sculptures are just beyond the low wall on the Malecon and you won't have to worry about them running into one but they will be able to see them very well! The statues are on the walkway which is very wide and good for walking with young children and some of the statues are quite unique. Los Muertos beach is easy to get to from this area.

There are many good suggestions, one might be the very unique Puerto Vallarta Zoo where they can hold or pet as necessary because of age, baby tigers and jaguars, plus feed all the animals except the big cats.. But it will take about as long as going to Bucerias and they are in opposite directions, so it depends on if you want to travel a little. There is also a nice beach not far from the zoo in Mismaloya.

You can also have a simple dinner on the Malecon at Cheeky Monkey and watch the Pirate ship come in and briefly shoot off fireworks.

Check out my review (with pics) for the Crown Paradise Club Puerto Vallarta: "Budget Friendly, Huge Beach & Excellent Food!" This hotel offers day passes (not sure how much) to cruise ship travelers... very close to the marina, huge beach, kids club, pool and water park perfect for your age kids and good food.
