US dollar v. Pesos - preference

Do local retailers and taxi drivers prefer the USD or pesos? Will they accept that the USD is about 12 pesos when paying in USD?

I find it much easier and always just use all peso, for everything. There's no one answer as to what rate of exchange various merchants might give for USD (could be as low as 10/1). It's Mexico and easier to use currency of the country imo.

Just visit any cambio to change or use an ATM to withdraw direct.

If they accept USD expect 10 to 1 exchange.

Best to use pesos, we get ours using the many ATMs around town.

"Do local retailers and taxi drivers prefer the USD or pesos?"

A: Many will accept both, but at their exchange rate...generally 10:1

"Will they accept that the USD is about 12 pesos when paying in USD?"

A: No, see answer above.

The currency of Mexico is the peso. USD is a foreign currency and as such retailers establish the where/when/how of whether they will accept it and at what rate.

Use pesos. Seriously, it's easier and more respectful as a traveler to use the currency of the country you are in.

We will just jump on the bandwagon and make it clear that although many merchants and taxis will accept dollars, they would prefer Pesos. Accordingly, you will get a lousy exchange rate and lose about 20% on nearly every transaction if you do use dollars.

My travelmate took $400 each in pesos and USD (despite my copious advice against it) and decided to go to the ATM to continue using pesos when he ran out, rather than start spending the USD. It rarely, if ever, makes sense to use USD, except perhaps in leaving dollar bill tips.

Only 9 pages on this topic in Top Questions on this page. There are those that get it, those that don't and those that ask "get what".

What's also ridiculous is that I don't proof read before I post.

Only thing I can think of would be to show your lack of respect to your server, why else would one use mainly pesos but tip in dollar bills?
