Customs charged $20 (Cdn) fee for liquor in check-in luggage

Is this standard procedure? We were charged $20 to bring two bottles of tequila back to Canada in our check-in luggage. I've never heard of this practice.

I have never heard of that. Did they ask for cash?

It would be helpful if you name the airline. Especially as I've not heard of this before with regular carriers, but if you flew charter they tend to have their own rules about checked bags, carry on, etc.

Customs in Vancouver charged you $20 Cand??

Did just one of you declare both bottles (limit is 1.2ish litres PP) maybe they thought it was for just one of you and charged duty?

That is strange through.......we just got back and flew into Victoria we had 4 1 litre bottles of Cazadore in our checked luggage and got waved through. We were fully expecting to pay the duty but :D

This happened in April when my husband and I were there for two weeks. I'm going again on Saturday with my daughter and I just wanted to be prepared to refuse to pay the money again if this not legitimate. I spent hours researching online and have concluded that we are allowed to bring back liquor in our check-ins but no mention of paying a fee.

>>>West Jet Airlines. Mexican customs officer.<<<<

You only go through Mexican customs when you arrive in Mexico not when you leave.

Did the West Jet agent do this ? (the one who checked you and your luggage in)...if you have your receipt still, I'd be contacting Westjet, heck if you don't have it I would still be contacting them so they can look into it.

Why would you not have had them packed in your bag? Your story seems strange

You do not go through Customs when departing Mexico. So it sounds like someone else is running a side biz at the airport if what I am reading is correct. If you can clarify? Canadian Customs is charging you? Or a ticket agent?
