Contacting the bank prior to travel ?

Is it recommended to contact the bank prior to travel so you are able to withdraw funds and use a credit card while you are away.

I have in the past but is it necessary? Does any-one else do this?

I notify the bank every year. A couple years ago friends went to the Mayan and didn't notify their bank. They couldn't withdraw cash.

I do it all the time. It is recommended by the Bank that I do so.

My Capital One card will be rejected if I don't tell them I am away. My Amex or my ATM card don't care if I tell them or not. Guess that means it depends on the bank.

It's a good practice. I carry a MasterCard and Amex, and this summer forgot to notify MasterCard. Was a bit embarrassed in a Dublin restaurant when my card didn't go through. I was able to clear it up that evening online.

I contact the bank every trip to Puerto Vallarta, including my credit card company. Otherwise they can stop from giving out the funds. Not a happy place to be when your on vacation. Highly recommend contacting your banks.

I always do.

If they see transactions in another country they might suspect fraud and shut the card off.

"...press three to notify us of your travel plans..."

They're expecting you to call. Do it.

I contact my bank (ATM) and the credit card companies of the cards I'm carrying with me. They thank me every time.
