First time in PV 9/27-10/4 - Sunset Plaza

Previously been to Cancun and Cabo. Although we're not big party people (early 40's) , we've loved Cabo for the restaurants, scenery and weather.

Excited about coming to PV - looks tropical and beautiful and good restaurants.

I do have a few questions if anyone can answer them:

1) Taxi fare - I checked another part of this site and it quoted prices for taxi fare from the airport. This seems extreme. is this correct?

ZONE 1

HOTEL ZONE / DOWNTOWN

Cab: (1-3 people) $195.00 Van: $390.00 Pesos

2) Best place to watch College football on Saturday? Anyone know if the swim up bar at Sunset PLaza will have this?

3) Can we walk to town from Sunset Plaza? Some places I've read indicate it's a 5 minute cab ride, other things I've read indicate it's a short walk; not sure if this is on a busy street or what the walk area looks like....

Thanks! Looking forward to coming!

1) You do see those prices are in peso, right?

That's approx. $15usd for a car or $31usd for a van

2) It's a long walk or a short cab ride :)

195 pesos is only around $16 US.

The yellow city taxis are much cheaper, but they cannot pick up at the airport.

Map showing Sunset Plaza in the hotel zone, it would be a pretty long walk. Hit move down twice to see downtown.

It's on a busy street....4 lane but it's a street more like a boulevard, not a highway and it does have sidewalks in case you want to walk around that area. It's kind of a service area for a variety of everyday needs, but I don't think you'll be aware of the street from Sunset. Doesn't take long to get to the more charming part of PV by cab.

On the maps you were provided above.....the Downtown map and the South Side map are the most popular areas....the South Side being the most popular of the two, but it's nice to walk other places too.

hola amigo. pick the right time to visit vallarta, the difference weather wise is that is more humid here in vallarta, than Cabo, also here there is more things so see and do, and distances are very reasonable, tranportation is also reliable, as soon as you come out at the gates of the aiport there is a bridge that will take to the other side of the street where you can take a yellow city cab, you will save there about half of what you pay for the airport cabs, or if you rather take the public buses is just outside the airport is in case you, don´t carry too many bags, also compadre Teduardo mention the spots to watch the games, and if you like to walk it is nice from your hotel to downtown. are you owner at sunset plaza?

Thanks for all the replies! Looking forward to visiting. The humidity should be familiar since we're in Ohio. :)

Lisa K: I just returned last night and the humidity is much more than in OHIO. September may be different than yesterday. :)

You'll have a great time. I stay in that area regularly so will answer your questions.

First off, Sunset Plaza is a really nice facility, as far as the rooms go. We had a 2-bedroom there shortly after it opened. November, 2011. Every room has a view. Décor isn't traditional "Mexican" (unfortunately). It's more modern, but you should have plenty of space and a lovely terrace where you could enjoy a nap or a beverage. Terraces there are huge. It was one of our favorite elements of the resort.

TAXI---- just take the white federal cab from PVR. There are other ways to get to your hotel but it doesn't make sense for people coming for the first time to try alternatives. We take the bus but that would be nonsense on your first trip. Cab is well under $20USD and they have A/C. You are coming to PV at a hot/humid time of year.

COLLEGE GAMES ---- near Sunset Plaza is Casa Blakes. Blakes Sports Bar. Love the place. Good food and wonderful service. If I need sports (which I do) anywhere around that area, I always head to Blakes and talk to Mike or Sue (the owners) and they usually can pull up any game, based on request. "Sports at swim-up bar?" Ugh. There is "lore" here on this forum about swim-up bars that you might want to read.

WALKING DOWNTOWN ---- Just take a cab or a bus unless you like urban scenery in a Mexican city. Bus is 6.5 pesos. Cab is 50 pesos. It's a long walk and not scenic. Having stayed in that area for many years, off and on, unless you want to do a power walk past some non-scenic shops (and places that have closed years ago), don't waste your precious vacation time. Puerto Vallarta is a wonderful "walking town" and it would be best to use your "walking energy/time" in better places than walking to the Malecón down the main drag. Save your walking time for Centro shopping and sightseeing and southside eating/wandering.

Have a great trip.
