Zihuatanejo safety concern

Flying into Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo airport late December; taking a taxi to Troncones; staying at a small resort about 3 miles north of Troncones on the beach road; not planning on going anywhere while we’re there; taking taxi back to airport to fly home. Any safety concerns? Moderately safe? Safe? Extremely safe? Just concerned when US State Department has issued warning to use extreme caution when traveling in the northwestern part of Guerrero, and exercise caution when traveling on the coastal road between Acapulco and Ixtapa!”

You won't be near the "north-western part of Guererro" nor on the "coastal road Acapulo-Ixtapa" so even if you believe the warning you should feel OK. Personally I wouldn't worry at all.

I agree with SteveMex. Are you planning on surfing?

The undertow will be the most dangerous thing you will experience.

However if you do not get out & about some you are making a huge mistake.

You will miss the variety of incredible edibles, the friendly and gracious folks, the beautiful beaches. Not to mention shopping and bargaining! The charm of our area is not necessarily the secluded beach, but the whole package of culture, arts, food and scenic beauty.

I just got back from Zihuatanejo. I had some safety concerns heading down there, and my girlfriend was especially worried about our safety (as well as aggressive local men). However, neither was a problem at all. Everyone was very courteous, friendly, and respectful. (Including ourselves! :-D)

The one thing I would say is, these areas are still tourist destinations and you still need to use common sense. Don't throw money around. Don't get really drunk. Don't wander off with strangers. Don't walk down dark alleys in the dark. So long as you follow regular travel precautions you should be fine.

Enjoy the trip! We just got back last night to a Seattle that is more than half as cold as Zihuatanejo... brrrrrrrrrrr. We miss the beaches, sunshine, and great food already!

Very true. Perhaps we will reconsider that and spend at least a day exploring the town!

If you have never been to Zihua before, I would highly recommend you come and spend a day exploring the town! There is a lovely downtown area, with pedestrian-only streets, several shops and restaurants, in the main part of downtown near the pier.

You could take a water taxi over to Playa las Gatas for swimming and snorkeling. There are several palapa restaurant/beach clubs there, you pick one and hang out there for a few hours. It can be pretty busy though.

La Ropa might be quieter and more to your liking. Several restaurants that will serve as beach clubs to hang out at on that beach, too.

This is the best city map I have found:

You are saying late December?? As in Christmas/New Years?

If so, there will be lots of Mexican Nationals in town...and the town will NOT be like it normally is...it will be hectic and lots of traffic, and almost impossible to park a vehicle. Just a warning...

Ohhhh I missed that bit in her original post.....it will be a bit of a madhouse that week, yes.

After a week in Rincon de Guayabitos last xmas with people packed like sardines both on the beach and all over town, we try to avoid that week....and Easter/Semana Santa too.....just too busy for us.
