Guanajuato to San Miguel De Allende

We will be visiting Guanajuato in February and are renting a small apartment for a week. We would like to visit San Miguel for a day. Is this doable and is there a bus we can take (we won't be renting a car). Thanks in advance.

Yes, there are frequent second class buses and several first class with ETN and Primera Plus. It's only an hour and a bit, so second class is fine and doesn't take much longer. From San Miguel bus station, you can walk uphill to centro in about 15 minutes, or take any local bus outside the bus station heading to the right. There are cabs waiting but they charge rip-off fares! Going back to the bus station a cab is $30P. Guanajuato bus station is also a cab or local bus ride away from centro.

Bus fare in the city of Guanajuato is either 5 pesos or 6 pesos. I haven't figured out why some drivers charge 5 while others charge 6, even for the same route. I've tried asking the drivers, but they just shrug and tell me the fare with no explanation.

You might also want to do a day trip to Dolores Hidalgo while you're in Guanajuato. You may want to combine that trip with one to San Miguel as you can see the main sights in Dolores in a couple of hours. The bus route from Guanajuato to Dolores is quite scenic.

Have a great visit!

Agree Dolores Hidalgo is well worth some time. Lots of history & Dolores Hidalgo plates, sinks etc made there. Lovely town square plus excellent ice cream.

We just did this day trip this past Saturday. The bus station in Guanaguato is a bit outside the centre so you'll need to take a taxi there (35 pesos). The driver asked where we were going and when we told him San Miguel, he offered to drive us there for 600 pesos. We declined with thanks and he warned us that because this is rather a slow time of year for tourism, not all the buses run as scheduled; they wait for sufficient passengers before departing. We decided to take our chances anyway and were lucky in that a first class bus was scheduled to leave about 10 minutes after we arrived at the station (but it actually left after about 20 minutes). The electronic header on the bus indicated a departure time one hour previously so I think the taxi driver was right and the 8:50 am bus morphed into the 9:50 am. The ride was very comfortable and the landscape absolutely stunning. Yes, the taxi fares in San Miguel are a ripoff, we were charged 40 pesos each way however the walk to the centre of SM from the station is longish and not particularly pleasant, and your time is limited. I recommend the taxi, it is only a few dollars and worth it. You'll want to spend your time and energy walking the beautiful streets in the historic centre. One more thing- when we left Guanajuato we bought one way tickets to SM as we weren't sure how much time we would want to spend there but we checked the schedule so we had an idea of bus times back and planned our time accordingly. As it turned out we arrived in SM shortly after 11 and took the 5:30 bus back and this amount of time was just right for us. We walked, poked around in the many nice shops, people watched in the plaza, visited the church, took lots of photos, and had a very nice lunch at Hecho en Mexico. We just returned home to Canada last night so still processing everything but this is a great day trip, easily done. Enjoy!

Will be traveling from San Miguel de Allende to Guanajuato in early June have tried the Premera Plus website, but couldn't really figure out how to buy a ticket. What is the cost? Thanks

There is no need to buy tickets in advance. I just checked the Primera Plus website and it looks like the fare is 121 pesos each way. I'm pretty sure there is more than one bus company operating between San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato, so you can just go to the bus station and buy tickets for the next departure.

Is the bus from Guanajuato to Dolores more scenic than from SM Allende to Dolores?

Are there other reasons to go to Dolores from Guanajuato instead of from SM Allende?
