Trip report, with guide recommendation

Just spent the independence day in Mexico City, what an incredible experience. Here is a quick report with my recommendations.

Day 1, arrival at Historico Central Hotel. Absolutely amazing location and value for money. I plan to stay there whenever I return.

Day 2. Free walking tour arranged by the hotel with Julio from Mexico a pie. Amazing guide. Went above and beyond trying to show us the interesting sights and provided fantastic explanation. Went inside temple mayor later on our own and ended the day at Garibaldi square for the mariachi. Highly recommend the stalls at mercado at Garibaldi for dinner.

Day 3. Private tour to pyramid and Basilica de Guadalupe with Jorge Mendoza. He was beyond my expectations. Good driver, even better guide. Painted a picture of the lives at Teotihuacan with amazing details. Email him at jorgemendozaturismo@live.com to book a great experience. His rates are very reasonable compared with what you can book on viator or Expedia. That evening, we squeezed into Zacalo for the El Grito and fireworks. It was incredibly crowded but still orderly. What a wonderful and memorable event.

Day 4. Head to the chapultepec park for the museum of anthropology. Caught some of the independence parade and fly over at the park. Watched the flyers spinning on a pole outside the museum. Museum is immense, 4 hours and we had to skip lots of the mire minor exhibits. Then we went to the castle, which was unfortunately too crowded and they start to block off rooms when it is near closing time.

8 hours total, with about 3.5 hours at the pyramids, 4 people, 3200 pesos including everything but lunch.

Based on the recommendation above, we hired Jorge Mendoza to take us to Teotihuacan and the Basilica de Guadalupe for 2800 pesos for two (this did not include the entrance fee which he didn’t mention beforehand). He was on time, had a nice car, was a good driver, spoke good English and had good restroom breaks during the tour. Unfortunately, he was not “beyond our expectations”. He talked mostly about the indigenous people of Mexico instead of about the structures and people of the site we were visiting and he was really repetitive. For example, he told us six times what crops the indigenous planted, all while we were standing in the hot sun. Unlike the other guides, he didn’t climb the pyramids with us. As far as a guide goes, we found him boring. For lunch, he took us to a small restaurant located behind the pyramid of the sun. The food was okay but overpriced for the type of restaurant. The waiter asked if we wanted guacamole instead of the spicy sauce and brought a dessert of cactus flowers “to try” which we didn’t order. No mention was made of the cost or that they would be added to the bill. With the added 90 peso service charge, our bill was more than more upscale restaurants we had been to where we each had an alcoholic drink. Make sure you have the correct amount when paying Jorge because he doesn’t have change.
