Just spent the independence day in Mexico City, what an incredible experience. Here is a quick report with my recommendations.
Day 1, arrival at Historico Central Hotel. Absolutely amazing location and value for money. I plan to stay there whenever I return.
Day 2. Free walking tour arranged by the hotel with Julio from Mexico a pie. Amazing guide. Went above and beyond trying to show us the interesting sights and provided fantastic explanation. Went inside temple mayor later on our own and ended the day at Garibaldi square for the mariachi. Highly recommend the stalls at mercado at Garibaldi for dinner.
Day 3. Private tour to pyramid and Basilica de Guadalupe with Jorge Mendoza. He was beyond my expectations. Good driver, even better guide. Painted a picture of the lives at Teotihuacan with amazing details. Email him at email@example.com to book a great experience. His rates are very reasonable compared with what you can book on viator or Expedia. That evening, we squeezed into Zacalo for the El Grito and fireworks. It was incredibly crowded but still orderly. What a wonderful and memorable event.
Day 4. Head to the chapultepec park for the museum of anthropology. Caught some of the independence parade and fly over at the park. Watched the flyers spinning on a pole outside the museum. Museum is immense, 4 hours and we had to skip lots of the mire minor exhibits. Then we went to the castle, which was unfortunately too crowded and they start to block off rooms when it is near closing time.
