Art Happenings in the DF

I just read in the newspaper today that the Tamayo musuem has finally reopened although not all exhibit halls are open, the musuem welcomes visitors. On Feb. 12th they will begin an exhibit by Argentine Liliana Porter a multimedia artist and on Feb. 26th Oscar Munoz.

Also American photographer David LaChapelle will have an exhibit at Antiguo Colegio de San Il de fonso beginning Feb. 4th.

Yes, one of the great things about Mexico City is the variety of cultural offerings to be found. The admission prices are generally far lower than most other world cities and the exhibitions are world class.

Sunday is often free at museums (sometimes just for Mexicans such as at the Anthropology Museum) to attract students and boy they can get very crowded on a Sunday.

Sometimes the museum building itself is even more interesting than the exhibition. The Antiguo Colegio de San Il De Fonso is certainly an amazing building besides a leading museum.

On the fun aspect of culture, Mexico City hopes to break the world's record for gathering couples together for a kiss on Valentine's Day in the Zocalo. The City is using the classic song, "Bésame mucho" as a tourism marketing theme.

In addition to the museums which focus on Mexican art and culture, the National Museum of Anthropology has been featuring an international exhibit from Russia: “Czars, Wonders of Imperial Russia. Collections of the State Hermitage Museum.” I don't know the closing date, though.

The Russian exhibition is magnificent. Excellent suggestion. You still have time - it does not close till March 31.

Get there early as this is popular and avoid Sunday when Mexican nationals get in free and lines are longest. It is just 51 pesos to get into this exhibition (plus another $51 M.N. to get into the main museum if that is of interest.) For a fee, you can get tickets in advance at www.ticketmaster.com.mx but there are usually complications using a non-Mexican credit card.

It is also possible to go for an evening 90 minute visit with admissions from 7 pm to 8.40 pm but you have to reserve and pay upfront and fee is $400 M.N. per person.
