layover at mex and money exchange

i will be traveling to ixtapa from usa with a 3.5 hour layover at the airport in mexico city. (aeromexico) i have two questions that i hope someone can help me with. first i have been informed that i will clear customs at mex and then recheck for my domestic flight. are there recheckers after customs or do i have to go to the aeromexico counter? also i want to get peso's at the airport. are there any exchanges open at 5:30am or am i better off using an atm. if atm is better do they have english instructions and do they have the slide thru type? thank you in advance.

RE. your luggage I have no idea but hopefully there will be an Aeromexico agent to inform you what to do when you arrive. The good thing is that you will arrive and depart from the same Terminal 2 if your leg to ZIH is with AM, too.

I assume there will be money exchange bureaus open by the time of your arrival or they might start business by 6 or 7 am. You can also use your ATM but there are the "dip and slide" and the ones that keep your card during the transaction... look for the kind you want (remember that your bank may charge 1% fee added to the Mexican bank fee every time you make a withdrawal) and the machines have the instructions in both English and Spanish.

Previously you did NOT have to clear customs in Mexico City (only immigration - your bags were checked through) but this has now changed. Someone posted on another forum that Aeromexico told them the new rule only applied to layovers greater than 2 hours but, in your case, it looks like you will have to pick your bags up and recheck - not sure exactly where though! The good thing is that you have plenty of time so don't need to stress about it!

ATMs are probably the best way to go for your cash.

You will have to recheck your bags but Aeromexico meets its internaitonal flights with an agent holding a sign looking for connecting passengers. If there are long lines at Immigration, that person can usually take you through the crew/diplomatic line to speed it up. Then get your bags, clear Customs and recheck. There are lots of banks if you go towards the T2 parking lot and all have ATM's. You do not really need a lot of pesos in Ixtapa - dollars are fine and you will use credit cards for most things.

You will suffer a serious currency conversion charge in Ixtapa paying in USDs!

As always, the only way to go is a NO FEE ATM for cash, and a NO FEE CC for more expensive (no merchant add on) purchases world wide!

I use Capital One - no currency conversion fees anywhere.

My last ATM w/d at Banamex was 13.1853 when the early AM Interbank rate was !3.172MXN/USD. Takes Banamex a while to gear up each AM.
