Día de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe

We are arriving late on Saturday, December 11, and wanted to stay for two nights in the Zocalo area, but now realize that the Dia de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe is the following day. Is it true that "millions" make the pilgrimage to Mexico City (the zocalo area) for this day? Should we avoid it if it is our first visit to Mexico City, and just carry on to Oaxaca, where we planned to go on the Monday? Thanks.

Millions go to the Basilica which is well North of the Zocalo.

There will be perignaciones in all parts of town and on surrounding highways. The big ice skating rink and whatever other festivities the city plans this year are likely to be in place by that weekend and that will draw big crowds. Leave extra time to and from in your taxi - that is all.

Happy is right. Full ambience guaranteed, but if you want to do an excursion from the city center, best head to the southern part of the city that weekend, Coyoacán, University Campus, etc, will be less congested.

We are leaving DF on the 12th from the Zocalo area. Our plan is to take a taxi from Hotel Catedral and catch the 10:10 am bus to Guanajuto from Terminal Norte. Does this sound like a problem? Does anyone have any suggestions? We realize we will need to leave early, but how early?
