Best way to travel from Mexico City to Cancun/Resort areas

We'll be in Polanco , Mexico first week of November and would like to travel to the coast and stay at one of the resorts. Either Cancun or that side

We're unsure what would be best mode of travel... air? bus? tour bus?

How much time do you have? Obviously, air will get you there the quickest, but bus would be very interesting if you had the time. :)

Mexican buses are a couple of notches better than anything we have in Canada. Look for the most expensive bus serving the route you want; you really do get what you pay for in this regard. (And when checking schedules online, remember that "$" is the peso sign.)

You don't want a tour. If you would like to take a bus and see Mexico before reaching plastic land a very popular route is DF-Oaxaca-San Cristobal de las Casas-Palenque-Villa Hermosa-Merida-Cancun. Do some reading on those places. See what appeals to you and then come back with questions.
