Using a 7-hour layover at Mexico City

We have a long layover at Mexico City on a Sunday morning for 7 hours, with no baggage with us. We will already have a Mexican visa, so we are wondering if we can get a cab at the airport to take us around and back to the airport. Is it safe, and feasible in such a short time? If so, what are 2-3 highlights we can ask the cab driver to show us? Really appreciate if someone can advise on this.

Check the Top Questions section where is says "What can I do on a layover?" Just get an airport taxi into the center (e.g. the zocalo) and any cab can take you back - no need to spend money paying a driver to hang around.

Thank you. Seems (from Google Maps) Zocalo is about 30 minutes by cab. So we may be able to hang out in that neighborhood for 2-3 hours and catch a cab back (which assume will be easy to find since it is a Sunday). Thanks again.

From Zocalo back to Airport, although taxis hailed on the street are mostly safe, it might be a bit safer to walk to any of the hotels near the Zocalo and ask them to call a "sitio" or "radio" taxi to take you back to the airport. These taxis cost a bit more than taxis hailed on the street, but should be no more than the airport taxi you'll take to the Zocalo. You can also reserve a pickup time and place (in front of the Gran Hotel de Mexico is an easy landmark) in advance with a radio taxi company like TaxiMex, tel: 55 5519 7690, RET, tel: 55 5634 1111, or others. If you have the Uber app on a smartphone and have data access on your phone in Mexico, they are another option to get back to the airport.

Walk around DF and see the cathedral and the national palace. Both are nearby each other. Just make sure you leave ample time to get back to the airport. Traffic in Mexico City can be quite overwhelming.
