I'd go Friday or Saturday to Monte Albán, your pick. The Saturday abastos market is overwhelming, but very interesting so sure, that's an option. But lately I have heard of the odd robbery on those busy market days, not only at abastos, so here are a few points of advice, not to alarm anyone, but just so you remember you'll be in crowds where robbers in any city in the world hang out:

-take along only a copy of your passport photo page and copy of tourst visa

-do not take any credit cards

-do not take any more money than you can reasonably spend in those 2 - 3 hours

-keep say 100 - 200 pesos in one pocket, and the rest hidden in another

-if you have a point and shoot camera as well as an SLR with fancy lens, leave the latter in your hotel, and if not, make sure the camera is in front of you at all times

-I'd rather see you use a green garbage bag or something else inconspicuous to keep the fancy camera in, not just the camera bag

-no jewelery

-no smart phones

-dress down as in blue jeans or other long pants, shirt with sleeves v. t - shirt which connotes a tourist, etc.

Alvin's advice is excellent not just for Oaxaca markets but for any location that attracts large numbers of tourists. And the number of tourists has increased substantially this year.

Don't carry your passport with you anywhere while you are in town. Leave it in the hotel safe. There are many ways to lose it that don't involve theft and it takes a lot of time and effort to replace it.

As for Monte Alban, the most important thing is to arrive as early as possible in the morning so you can enjoy your visit before it gets too hot. There is little shade. Take a bottle of water and sunscreen and a hat.
