Tour Guide & Transportation to Monte Alban?

I inquired about transportation and tour guide with a company that seems very academic, a good thing, but they want $160 for 1/2 day and $250 for a full day, including transportation and visiting villages on the way. That seems a bit expensive.

Does anyone have experience and recommendation for a tour guide who would take us both there and serve as an educated informed guide?

Take the dedicated Monte Albán bus line from Calle Mina, 500 block north side of the street, through the lobby of Hotel Rivera del Angel, for about 55 pesos per person return, and once up there buy your tickets to enter the ruin and find an English speaking guide just around where you buy your entrance tickets. I get good reviews sending people to Mario, Hector, Juan and Clemente but not sure if Clemente is still up there. Most of the guides up there are bilingual and good, and are specialists at guiding tourists at Monte Albán. You can also take a cab up to the ruin for I suppose about 125 - 150 pesos, and get a bus to bring you back down. On the other hand, if a full day is 8 - 10 hours, for two of you, and includes entrance to the ruin and a federally licensed guide to take you through the ruin, then taking you to the villages you want to see, with you calling the shots meaning a fully personalized tour based on where you want to go, and see for how long, $250 USD is NOT out of line.

I used a taxi driver in Oaxaca. He took us all over Oaxaca and surrounding villages. Will go with you to the markets wit you, translate, help with transactions, take to to different artisans, mezcalerias. Very helpful, courteous, punctual and prize is reasonable. We took a tour yesterday through a tour guide group called either Ayuso Tours or guías de turistas de Oaxaca. It is set up at a little desk in the Casa de Las Artesanias en Oaxaca on Matamoros Street. It's run by a guy named Fred or Eugenio Rodrigo Cruz Castañeda. They do not have a van of their own and they contract with another guide group. The guy at the desk was so eager to make a sale that every time we hesitated on the tour to Monte Alban he would lower the price. In the end we paid $250 pesos with the assurance everything would be paid for. We both speak fluent Spanish so language was not the issue. He also promised we could go to Santo Tomas Jalieza which was listed on the little brochure.

However on the day of the tour upon arriving at Monte Alban we were told that our admission to Monte Alban was not included nor was our lunch, our guide kept passing his cell phone to us for us to argue with some guy on the other end. It was not the money we cared about but the fact that we were lied to to make the sale. The owners refused to acknowledge their responsibility and kept saying the guy who sold us the tickets was wrong---not seeing that that was their employee. They also told us we weren't going to Santo Tomas Jalieza.

Make sure that you are very sure what is included in your package. Some people paid $50 dollars to go on the same tour which is way overblown, the buffet lunch is $130 pesos and the entrance to Monte Alban is $60 pesos. Suggestions: don't buy tickets from this company. Get the lowest price and pay the entrances and food yourself.

Gaye G: I guess the moral of the story is to take the advice of the Oaxaca Destination Expert (see earlier post on the topic), or others who regularly contribute to the forum and know the ropes based on years and years of experience living in or travelling to Oaxaca. By the way, lowest price is not always the best option when visiting and touring in and around Oaxaca, with all due respect.
