SC to Palenque to Antigua

Just ret'd from two weeks in Chiapas...didn't see all we wanted. Heading back next February for Sumidero Canyon and Palenque before going on to Antigua. Couldn't quickly find a flight out of Tuxtla to get to Antigua. Does this mean bus is the only option? And if so, any 'bus lines' one would recommend or do we need to go one way with a tour company. We'll be spending 2 weeks in Guatemala and then flying back to Baja. Thanks....

Flying is impractical - you have to fly back to Mexico City and change planes with total journey times being 16+ hours! And of course it's expensive.....

You could get a bus to Tapachula (very frequent service) and then Ticabus (www.ticabus.com.mx) from there to Guatemala City. Total cost is under 50 USD but you may have to overnight in Tapachula. Alternatively you may find a shuttle service San Cristobal-Guatemala City (hopefully someone local will chime in with details).

A few years ago, I took a bus to Cuidad Cuautemoc, walked across the border and then hopped on a local bus to Xela. There are onward connections to Antigua, Lake Atitlan etc. The van service would be more expensive but perhaps easier if you are not a confident independent traveller who speaks at least a modicum of Spanish:

There are travel agents in Palenque who will get you across the border near Bonampak and on to Flores/Tikal. You could do this journey in reverse if you need to get back to Mexico without retracing your steps.

Interjet has quite inexpensive flights between GUA and MEX. Not sure if a o/w would be a good option.

Thanks for your help. I was hoping to get a flight out of Tuxtla...but doesn't look doable. Have a friend going from Oaxaca in the same boat. We don't want to backtrack to DF.... Was struggling to find who services Guatemala City out of Mexico...anybody but Interjet?

Aeromexico fly direct to Guatemala from Mexico City but tend to be very expensive (around 600 USD one-way). Interjet is the best option on that route.
