airport bus travel : Tuxtla/San Cristobal

Are there collectivos from the airport that go to Tuxtla where one could take a bus to San Cristobal. If so, are there best choices for buses to San Cristolbal? Or any choice?

We arrive after dark at the airport --after a long dayt of travel-- so thinking of spending a night in Tuxtla (any suggestions?) partly to sleep, but also thinking of seeing the zoo in the morning and then taking a bus to San Cristobal during the day. At least we could see where we're headed instead of traveling in the dark.

Thanks in advance for the help.

You are going to have to take a taxi. I know of no airport in Mexico with collectivos. The taxi unions who be upset. There is usually a nearby bus stop used by airport employees, but after a flight is it worth the trouble and walk to get to one to save a few bucks. Three years ago, the taxi fare was around US$6.

The new airport in "Tuxtla" opened this year (May 2006) -- it is actually outside of Chiapa de Corzo. It is approximately a one hour, 20 minute ride to San Cristobal on the "new road" and the taxi charge from the airport is 550 pesos. That is approximately $50.00 US as of November 2006. A taxi ride to Tuxtla is going backwards and is about 50 minutes and then you'd still need to get to San Cristobal, which from Tuxtla is about 50 minutes. It is a big complaint for many travelers -- also going to Tuxtla from the airport: that it is expensive and there are no alternatives. Some of the B & Bs and hotels will offer a cheaper pick up for you. Good luck and enjoy San Cristobal -- it's a wonderful town where you can walk to most anywhere. Going back to the airport is cheaper from the taxi stand in San Cristobal. Around 350 pesos. The zoo is absolutely wonderful, and I don't like zoos. It is best visited in the afternoon when the monkeys and big cats are more likely to be awake.

one more point to add... you may be able to split the fare by having others join you in the taxi. The driver can take 3 passengers with luggage. The woman who sold us our taxi chit split the cost among us so I sense it is a common practice.

I hope you enjoy San Cristobal as much as we are!

Any recommendations for a mid range place to stay in San Cristobal?

Also are there buses from Tuxla airport to San Cristobal?

There are not buses that I know of from Tuxla airport into SC. We split the cost of taxi( about US $50) among the 3 of us. The 3rd person we met while asking questions about the cost of secure taxi into SC.

There are collectivos from SC back to the airport. Any of the travel agencies in town can help arrange that.
