Isla Mujeres to Tulum

We are spending a week at the end of April on Isla Mujeres and want to visit the ruins in Tulum. Can anyone advise on the best way to travel there? Thanks. Loubee

1. Re: Isla Mujeres to Tulum

My wife and I do not like GROUP tours. Some tours add stops at "mall-type" places and certain restaurants. Some people like that "structure".

When we stayed near Playa Del Carmen we wanted to see Tulum ruins before the tour groups arrived, which is around 10am. We took a cab from our resort to the bus station in Playa Del Carmen. We bought tickets for like $6 each 1 way (about 5 years ago) and rode on a motorcoach bus. We asked the driver to stop at the road to the ruins.

It was about a 45 minute bus ride (w/AC). We packed bottled water and wore comfortable clothing, packed bug spray, hats and sun screen.

He stopped the bus about 2 miles n. of the village of tulum and let us and others out. There are many taxis parked at that intersection. There also is a small "mall" on the SE side about 1/4 mile in. We walked about 1 mile on the gravel rd. to the ruins.

We arrived at about 8am and there were only 3 or 4 other people!

On the way back, we walked to the taxis caught a taxi to the Tulum bus station and saw a bus parked outside. We paid for our bus tickets to Playa the bus station person pointed at the bus that was ready to leave. We were back on the beach at the resort by 12:30pm with a full day of beach enjoyment remaining.

Others say to wer swim wear and to enjoy the beach water right at the base of the ruins.

Read up about the carvings on the ruins BEFORE you go.

Some guides make up stories about the ruins. The true history of the ruins is easily accessible on te web.
