Valladolid vs Puerto Morelos for 3 day visit

Hello all you TA people,

Am looking to determine where to spend the last 3 days of our trip. We will be staying in PDC until the "adult" kids leave to go back to college and have about 3 days to kill with hubby after that. We thought we would go to Puerto Morelos, but then I found Valladolid and now I am stymied. Has anyone been to both towns? If so, which did you prefer and why. A few things that we like to do are cenotes (of course!); close proximity to some nightlife-but not crazy "20 something" nightlife; beach not that important as we will probably have our fill in PDC and access to a colectivo or similar transportation to take our own "unguided tours" as we will not have a car Thanks for any help to make this decision!

I lived in Valladolid for about a year and it one of my favorite places. It has all you want with the possibility that it somewhat lacks nightlife. But it does give you a taste of the "real" Yucatan and is really a nice colonial town with a wide range of well priced hotels. Cenotes are in Valladolid or nearby. Excellent transportation including first and second class buses as well as taxis and colectivos. Very easy to reach from Playa by ADO first class buses.

Valladolid is a very large city and Puerto Morelos is a very small village. I have been to both and both are worth checking out. Personally I would rather visit Valladolid and I would rather stay in Puerto Morelos.

At about 46,000, I do not call Valladolid , "a very large city". I do call Merida that but one of my favorite places. Puerto Morelos has about 10,000 but surrounded by very populous area. If looking for cenotes and ruins sites, Valladolid would be my choice with my favorite ruins site, Ek Balam nearby and also Chichen Itza. Neither place is heavy on the nightlife. Just a matter of personal perferences where to choose. I like both.

Thank you Robert and Dabride!

So, in keeping with the laid back feeling of Mexico, maybe we will just head to Villadolid from PDC and take it day by day (meaning no reservations and only pay per night for more flexibility) and then head to PM whenever we want--at least that way we will be heading "back" toward Cancun for the flight home! Get to see both towns and experience a little of everything!

Meander48 yw :-) I own all the maps below but the Mayan Adventure one (actually maps plural) was really helpful for planning.
