Roads between Coba and Valladolid

We're thinking of a Yucatan trip sometime soon, and plan to rent a car & travel independently.

Itinerary might start at Cancun, then go to Tulum, and then branch off into the interior to Coba, proceeding on to Valladolid. But the maps we have seem to show that the road between Coba and Chemax is unpaved?

Is this section feasible (or indeed a useful route) in a normal rental car? Or should we take a longer way round via Tres Reyes? Or would we actually be better off just backtracking to Cancun and taking the motorway?

I would suggest running that route backwards. Start in Cancun, head to Valladolid via the toll road. Then go to Coba to Tulum and then head north back to Cancun. I think this would be the most efficient as you will be using the tollway for the long portion of your trip.

Thanks... but we are also planning to go further eas:t to Merida (and Uxmal) later in the trip, so the anticlockwise cancun->tulum->coba->valladolid/chichen_itza->Merida route seems to make sense looking at the map.

The main question is whether the road between Coba and Chemax is viable for a normal rental car?

Or is it something to avoid?

Oh... I meant clockwise, of course, cancun to tulum to Coba is clockwise, isn't it?!

Still, the main question is: state of the road between Coba and where that road joins a major road (180, I think?) to Valladolid?

We drove from Valladolid to Tulum, passing by the turnoff to Coba - the road is totally fine, well paved, good signage.

The Mayan Adventure map/guide may be a useful purchase;

The main roads on the Yucatan peninsula (such as the one between Coba and Chemax) are excellent. Once you get off the main roads, you will find the quality to vary wildly, everything from paved roads with dangerous potholes to unpaved roads to little more than trails through the forest.

But on the main roads you should be okay. Have a great trip!

Yeah, the main roads down there are actually on average in better shape than our roads in California. :-)

Just watch out for topes (speed bumps). Maybe someone can post a picture of the sign warning of them ahead.

Do not drive over them without slowing to almost a crawl.

I couldn't find a picture of the funny sign for the big topes - the one where it looks like the car is being launched into space :-) But yeah, go slow over them, that's the point. You will find them upon entering and sometimes exiting towns for the most part. They won't really be in random places between towns where you wouldn't expect them.

So is it a good paved road? All the way from Coba to Chemax to Valladollid?
