Yucatan trip in July - should we rent a car?

Plans for our July trip are shaping up nicely. We've already booked a few chill out days in Puerto Morelos but would then like to go to Merida for the Sunday markets and visit Chichen Itza. We need to be back in Cancun for an early afternoon flight to Oaxaca on the Wednesday. We were originally going to get a bus to Merida and back to Cancun but might be nicer to drive back and stay somewhere on the way. Is Vallodolid worth visiting or should we stay at one of the haciendas near Chichen Itza?

Just for the convenience factor alone, who would want to stand around in the hot and humid hurricane season waiting for a bus.........

Make sure you read Bellasogno`s car rental tips.

In particular, allow yourself plenty of time to catch your flight to Oaxaca. Apparently, the local constabulary like to hang out on the road to the airport in an attempt to pick up some easy `Mordida` pickings. Ensure your luggage can`t be seen and if you do get pulled over, do NOT mention that you`re on your way to catch a flight (the cops will figure that now you`re unders some time constraints, you won`t have time to call their bluff and are more likely to pony up a bribe). If asked, you can always tell them you`re on your way to pick someone up at the airport.

Merida is a great city - we loved it, and Valladolid is neat too. You could do something like this:

Sunday: Early trip to Merida, rest of the day in Merida

Monday: Morning in Merida, mid-day travel to Valladolid, evening in Valladolid

Tuesday: Morning visit to Chichen Itza, afternoon visit to cenote and/or Ek Balam and/or more time in Valladolid

Wednesday: Leave Valladolid early am for drive/bus back to Cancun in time for your flight to Oaxaca.

Having a car would give you more flexibility and driving is pretty easy - just read up on the pitfalls so you know what to do to avoid them. You can do this by bus with some help with taxis as well. You won't need a car in Merida at all, but it could come in handy in Valladolid/Chichen Itza. If you go by bus, I would definitely stay in Valladolid over Chichen Itza though - the transport options to and from Valladolid are more numerous and in Valladolid, you can actually walk to things. If you stay at lodging near Chichen Itza, the only thing near by is Chichen Itza itself - staying right there is definitely neat though, and you don't have to get up as early to get to the ruins when they open. We stayed at the Mayaland and had a view of the Mirador from our hotel room balcony. Way cool.
