driving to Chichen Itza

How safe is for a woman and 2 kids (11&9) to drive from Playa del Carmen to Chichen Itza? I am planing on renting a car and driving there....leaving early in the morning and returning the same day. What route should I take and what other places are worth to see?

Depends how good a driver you are - no other worries. Toll road most of the way if you go up towards Cancun and turn off before Cancun proper (head towards Merida). Biggest risk is boredom as the road is very flt and quiet.

Good advice from Steve. An easy, safe drive however you do it. If you want the toll road, as Steve says, you will head toward Cancun and make the turnoff South of the airport. And as said, the drive is boring. You might want to make the return via Valladolid and Tulum. Valladolid would make a nice lunch stop and to walk around for awhile.

Do start out very early to avoid the mob scene and vendors at Chichen.

Just make sure you have a full tank of gas, only one Pemex on the toll road, at the service island where you can also buy water, snacks, etc.

The toll road may be safest from an accident safety standpoint but either route is very safe. The toll road has to be one of the country´s most boring trips. As said, I would do each route in one direction. The kids may enjoy seeing the small villages on the Tulum return route.
