First, we felt completely safe walkng around the touristy areas last week.

I did have one question, maybe someone knows the why ... on Wednesday last week, we walked from the end of our hotel, across the street in front of the supermarket, to catch the bus in front of the yellow “Mexican Market.” In that area in front of the supermarket were maybe 10 HEAVILY armed men - as in huge rifles out, and protective gear on. They were kind of standing around, I said “good morning” to one of them as we walked by, no smile, just a nod. My son was thrilled to see the rifles out, but I’m curious why so much for a 10am on a Wednesday.

Someone back home suggested maybe the supermarket was receiving a cash delivery or something and that type of artillery is needed to protect it.

They were gone by 1 when we returned.

Its very common in Latin American Countries to see. As long as they are not after you, you will be just fine.

Just got back from PDC. Saw a few of these groups with about five to ten of them. Being Canadian we are not use to seeing Police with guns that look like AK47s. It did seem unusual seeing so many of them.

There's a heavy military and federal police presence in the hotel zone. It makes most people feel more safe not less. The police with heavy weaponry including automotics does not seem terribly unusual coming from the US but but military patrolling domestic civilian areas is. It's just the way they do things. I'd be afraid for them if they weren't armed and unable to protect themselves.

It was 11am. Maybe they were just in Chedraui getting some lunch.

I saw something similar once in Chetumal, so I asked one of them, and he said it was because of a visiting government official,

Could be because of the shooting last week on Delfines Beach.

I would be scared to death since the police corruption is so bad in Mexico.

It made me feel safe. They're protecting the golden calf, Cancun.

@9 I'm from Texas and I've never owned a gun, shot a gun, or seen people carrying guns. That's a really stupid stereotype. I'm not sure if you're trying to be funny or not.
