What exactly are you looking for in a resort?

Our first ever AI was Secrest Excellence Riviera Cancun. We couldn't have been happier with our choice. Something for everyone there. 7 pools, 7 fabulous restaurants, excellent service, awesome room, adult only, but beach was OK due to sea grass. I am more of a pool person, so I didn't care about the water not being the beautiful blue of Cancun's beaches.

For me, there is no better all-inclusive than GCPS in Cancun.

The beach is breath-taking, the food is excellent, and the view is spectacular.

It is just between the Ritz-Carlton and Le Meridien, a short bus ride away from all the malls and nightclubs.

As an added bonus, it is adults-only and it allows topless bathing at the pools and the beach.

With all due respect for other opinions, you can find wonderful pools at many resorts in the continental U.S. and around the world. The point of coming to Cancun is to enjoy the beach. Who cares that Secrets has 7 pools? If it doesn't have 1 good beach it is worthless! For beautiful pools you might as well go to Las Vegas!

If you decide on Cancun, I can recommend the Riu Palace. It was possibly our best stay anywhere! It is not adult only, but caters a bit more to the adult crowd, you won't see many children there.

The beach is a bit narrow, but gorgeous clear blue water! There are two pools, one with a swim up and activities/music. Also a quieter one, with beds along side it!!! We loved that for our afternoon naps. '

The hotel is new, so just absolutely gorgeous! ALL the staff was extrememly happy and friendly, and we found the food to be the best at any AI we've been to, comparing it to food on a cruise!

There are so many great resorts to choose from, you really just have to do your homework. This is a great site, make sure you pick a few you are interested in and start reading the reviews on them.

There is also a Playa del Carmen board, you can post this there and see what responses you may get. We've done CAncun a few times recently, so we will be in Playa del Carmen in Dec at the Iberostar Tucan. Check the Iberostar chain out for down there, they get great reviews, too!

If you are flying in April I would be careful to ask the Travel Agent when all the kids"Spring and Summer Breakers leave Cancun"

You will not be happy to see what they usually do while down there...

In the Cancun area only..

I second the Riu Palace Las Americas. Granite counter tops and cherry wood trim, it is so nice, it kind of looks out of place in the hotel zone.

I think it really depends on what you're looking for. The Riviera Maya area is a lot quieter than the downtown, in-your-face party town of Cancun. We love the Bahia Principe resorts, but we like a big place where we can explore and get to know a bunch of new friends. It's quieter there, you're closer to some of the touristy stuff around the Tulum area, but there really isn't much for partying going on there. It's the place to consider if you're looking for something quieter, especially around spring-break time.

Does anyone know if there is fresh crab or lobster at the Golden Crown Paradise Spa?

Loved the Golden Crown Paradise! It is a great smaller adult only resort. Sitting at the Tiki Bar and looking out at that gorgeous water is just heaven. The bartendars are great and keep you laughing.

One thing to think about when deciding between Riviera Maya and Cancun is travel time. It takes a good 45 minutes to get down there from the airport. When you stay in Cancun you are at your resort in usually 15-20 minutes, and that means more beach time.

fruitfarmer, the Shangri La had lobster one night during both of our visits. Remember to bring a pair of long pants and closed shoes for men to eat at this restaurant. No reservations are required at this hotel, for any of their restaurants...
