Back from Sun Palace

Just got back from 5 nights at the Sun Palace, celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary. We had an awesome time. And, used all but $8.00 of our $1500.00 Palace Promotion Dollars :)

Any questions?

Yes, ditto. We'll be at the Sun Palace in 35 days so anything you can share would be great. We're already booked in a Concierge Room (since we will be there in November, we didn't want to take a chance on an upgrade)

I'm wondering how we can use all those Palace dollars. Any suggestions?

Also, how was the romantic dinner?

Here goes: First of all 2 of the restaurants at the Sun as well as the romantic dinners are based on Weather. The Steak and the Oriental are outside. Most of the nights were too windy, so we lucked out booking our Romantic Dinner (On the beach in front of the Italian Restaurant) for our 2nd night there. And, our first night we had eaten outside at the Steak. After our 2nd night, there were no more meals/activities outside at night. There are only two "formal" sit down restaurants for dinner the Italian, (has a dress code long pants and button shirts for men), and the Mexican. The steaks and some of the oriental foods move in to the Mexican if it's inclement weather!

We used our dollars for one $115.00 wine at dinner. Two tours, Isla Mujeres and the Jungle Tour. The Jungle Tour was incredible, I highly recommend it! $292 out of $300.00 allowed at Spa. Then, since it was our anniversary and you can buy pictures with your Palace Money, we did a photo shoot for $420.00, they take 25 pictures you get 8 5X7 prints and then the rest on a disc. Then on the last morning we had $228.00 left so we decided to buy more pictures. He sold me a $220.00 package of all the pictures they had taken of us during the week, (by pool, at dinner, etc.), on a disc and two more prints.

We loved the Italian, ate there two nights. Try to get a table in the window overlooking the beach, the view is awesome!

We went to Cancun palace for one afternoon/evening. Took a city bus from there to do some shopping in town. Then had a drink and appetizers at their huge lobby bar. Then ate at their habachi table in their oriental for dinner. Need resies to sit at the habachi table.

You can take a free shuttle to the Moon Palace for the day. If you leave at 1ish you get back by 6ish, or you can leave later and come back I think 9ish. We met a few people at that did this but we had stayed there once so we didn't.

If you do the Isla Mujeres tour they now bring you to Dolphin Discovery. You could book side tours from there or swim with the dolphins. If you don't book anything, they leave you there until 3:00 PM which is quite boring. So we went out the main entrance of Dolphin Discovery and there are taxis waiting. We took an island tour by taxi. The going rate is $20 per hour. He stopped often for pictures and we climbed a light house. Then he left us at the Isla Mujeres palace for lunch, (adults only). Then we took a taxi back to the Centro, (downtown), to meet our ferry back. They party: dance and drink tequila on the way back. Then a bus takes you back to your palace resort.

If I missed something or you have more questions, let me know!

We did move to a Concierge room. We had an ocean view before, so the only upgrades were aroma therapy in our room which was really nice, upgraded liquor in our mini bar, a pillow menu and you have your own concierge, so you can book your dinner, spa, tours etc. right on your floor until 11:00 PM. You also can order from the actual dinner restaurants room service from 6:00 to 10:00 PM, but we didn't do that. And, you get turn down service with petit fours each evening.

You also get reserved fancy lounge chairs and umbrellas with a waitress on the beach.

Thanks so much for all your tips. I can't wait....one month from Saturday!!

Did you see any of the shows? Was it difficult to get reservations for the Hibachi tables at CP? And since the Jungle Tour wasn't listed as something you could use Palace dollars on, were you able to use them or did you need to pay for that?

We are VIP members who just returned from Sun Palace also. We were there September 13 thru Sept 20. We still prefer Aventura Spa way over Sun Palace, but we had a good time. One problem however was that the Mexican Bicentenial was September 15th, so Sun Palace closed all but the Italian Restaurant for dinner on the 15th, 16th, 17th, and 18th (Alamo was also open one of those nights) because they were serving Mexican food and celebrating in the ballroom. We did the Mexican one night, but no more since the food selection was the same every night. We got quite bored of the Italian restaurant also. The food did not compare to what we are used to at Aventura Spa Palace. We did have the romantic lobster on the beach and we had another dinner on the beach that comes with the concierge room and it was very good. Breakfast was OK and only offered at the Alamo ( at Aventura we always preferred to eat outside on the huge ocean balconys, but at Sun we stayed inside) and we usually had lunch on the beach or at the pool.

We love the spa at Aventura Spa and Sun Palaces spa does not come close to Aventuras.

The pools were very small and shaded over from the hotel shadow in early afternoon. There were 2 large groups there and since Sun is so small you could not escape them. They had a loud fight going between the 2 groups one late afternoon at the largest pool (the one with the swim up bar). We could hear it in our room.

We love the larger property and tropical feel of Aventura Spa over Sun. We love the flowers, trees, monkeys, iquanas, birds, waterfalls, etc. Sun sort of felt like we were on the hotel strip in Miami. We seem to spend alot more time outside at Aventura Spa.

But as I said, we still had fun and service was great.

We already had a concierge room booked so we did not have to upgrade. Since we are VIP members we were able to use the $1500 on the jungle tour which was fantastic and fun and on the nightclub tour to Dadyos which was not worth it. We also used $300 of the $1500 on spa treatments (we also had our included members manicure/pedicures and back massages). We used some of the $1500 on the Romantic Lobster and champagne beach dinner which was great. We also used the $1500 to book a limo to take us to airport at end of trip and we used the resort photographer for photos with the $1500. I think we had about $90 left over.

Also, just to let members know, after we booked everything we could with the $1500 they told us we still could book our 2 free tours, per our membership! This was a surprise to us, as we had been told as others have, that we could not. But we had already done all of the free tours before and we were only staying 1 week this time, so we did not book any. Interesting though.

One other fun thing were the large sea turtles (they were huge approx. 400lbs.) coming in at night and laying their eggs on the beach and then at 8:00 every night you could go down and release some of the babies into the ocean. Neat experience.

All in all we had fun, but will probably not go back to Sun Palace.
