I arrived in Cancun on 4/15/12 with my rental car reservation in hand for our 8 day stay in Playa del Carmen. We had reserved a compact car through expedia for $99 USD with advantage rental car at the airport. We also purchased a rental car insurance policy back home from Sanborn's Insurance agency prior to our arrival. When we got to Advantage, the shifty guy at the desk who was getting all the paperwork together for us and finding the car I'd imagine tells us first off that the insurance policy we purchased prior to our arrival was essentially no good here since they don't have a relationship with any insurers except for the one that they use on site for suckers to purchase at the time of rental. After hearing this, to make matters worse, this guy has the audacity to tell us that we would need to sign a waiver accepting full responsability for any damages incurred to the vehicle since we did not wish to use their insurance. Then if it couldn't get any worse, it did. He continues to tell us that in order to complete the transaction, he would need to charge us $1600 USD in order to rent the car at this point!!!!!!! At first, he said that would be due to us not wanting their insurance for $16 USD/day. Then, when we informed this rotten conniving con artist that we would reluctantly accept the insurance, HE STILL SAID WE WOULD NEED TO BE CHARGED $1600 USD!!!!!! Of course, we were outraged by this scam and told the guy he could go stick it where the sun doesn't shine and were about to walk out. At this point, his "manager" who happens to also represent a hotel tried to give us a better deal, offering us the same car with the same $16 USD/day insurance, but with only an $800 USD charge on the credit card to complete the transaction. He even claimed he would get us $140 back as long as we agreed to visit his hotel that he represents. Of course, we were not interested in this time share scam either and told the guy we still weren't interested, then he got his "manager" who still tried to throw in other extras but with the same deal the other "manager" offered. Even after telling each of these people that we have never ever encountered this problem when renting a car in Mexico, which we have several times in the past with no issue, they claimed every company has the same policy. Finally we had enough and left, and of course were approached by many other car rental agents as we left the advantage office since we were still at the airport without a vehicle. Please heed this advice and do not ever give Advantage rental car you business if you ever plan on renting a vehicle during your stay. In my opinion, they on tourists, expecting them to just say ok to whatever crazy, outlandish "policies" they state are customary in Mexico and hope that you don't understand or speak Spanish to make it even easier. Unfortunately for them, we do understand and speak enough to not get conned. Just walk away! Use Zippy rental car in the hotel zone, no hassles and friendly service, ask for Joseph Coleman-he runs the location in the northern hotel zone area across from the Barcelo Costa Cancun! Advantage rental car corporate will be hearing from us in the very near future!
