all inclusives

We will be going to cancun in the spring, our last trip was 4 years ago.We are not interested in all inclusives. Can we stay at a resort and opt OUT OF THE ALL INCLUSIVE.

Yes, you can but you won't find much of a difference in the cost of a flight from Canada to Cancun as opposed to what your pay for AI which includes transfers to and from the hotel.

I didn't think you would be able to opt out, unless the hotel offered both non AI or AI basis

Many hotels that offer AI only have AI and you cannot opt out. You will want to look for one that has a European Plan (i believe that is what they call it), which is not AI.

jetsetter, you have to specifically look for a Non-AI. It's harder to find in Cancun but gets easier as you go out a ways, towards Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos, Cozumel of Isla Mujeres.

Since we can take a month off we do one week by getting an airfare - hotel deal in the hotel zone. This time we did get a non-AI but we are in the hotel zone. But for the remainder of our trip we are staying at much smaller inns in Isla, Cozumel and Playa.

If you have trouble finding a non-AI maybe you would consider Los Cabos or Puerto Vallarta? I think there are more options there.

Make sure to factor in the price difference between an AI and non-AI. For my trip in August it was only about $10 more per person per night for a similar hotel with an all inclusive plan. That's 1 meal or a couple of drinks.
