If you have dollars, no reason not to take them.

If you have no dollars, it doesn't make much sense to trade pounds for dollars, and then dollars for pesos. When you pay in dollars, the vendors/etc are still performing an exchange -- and they will do so to their benefit (often at 20% or more). So you're going to get hit twice on the exchange rate. If you exchange pounds for pesos, you will be saving money.

What Peter said ..... and if you're flying with anyone other than BA or Virgin, you are going to have to pay a departure tax of 800 pesos per person. Pesos and sterling are always acceptable for that; dollars are hit and miss, so best not to rely on them for that particular expense.

(To anyone from the US or Canada reading this, we don't have to worry about paying departure tax as it's already included in the price of our tickets.)

Take pesos, you will get more for your money.

If you pay in dollars you can pay a surcharge in the exchange rate in that a shop or vendor could use a scale of 10/11 pesos to the dollar, when the actually rate maybe closer to 13 or 14.

You will also get your change in pesos, or on the buses no change at all if you use dollars. So you will have to work your change out in Pesos, then to dollars, then to £ to make sure you have paid for/got the right change.

Its not really easier to understand, if something says 10 pesos its 10 peso, if its 10dollars its 10 dollars. It is easy for people who already use dollars every day not to change them, but since you have to change from £ anyways it doesn't make sense to change to dollars.

A useful way of thinking is 20 pesos is around £1, so 200 is £10, 2000 £100 etc. keep that in your head and you will know pretty much exactly what you will be paying.

Plus if you are flying with Thomas cook or Thomson (with the odd expcetion it seems) you will only be able to pay your departure tax in £sterling or Pesos.

Also, with Thomas Cook (and some say Thomson although others have said that they do) you can only book excursions/trips in Peso's or cards, even though they are priced in dollars.
