Thomson and Thomas Cook - exit tax now ₤50

Gangaman posted on the Puerto Morelos forum that he just got back from Cancun and this tax has increased to ₤50. As he paid in sterling, he was unable to clarify the current peso amount. Can anyone advise what that has been recently?

FYI, if you're travelling to the UK with BA or Virgin, this tax is included in the price of your ticket. If you're travelling to Canada or the US with ANY airline, this tax is included in the price of your ticket.

Thomas Cook and Thomson somehow get away with not including this tax with their tickets, so if you're flying with them to the UK, be prepared to pay this tax upon departure.

It's around 800 pesos, it's always cheaper to pay in peso :)

I smell corruption, and have to wonder if he paid cash which simply disappeared without a receipt.

I just test-booked a non-stop flight on Virgin from London to Cancun in August, and it shows:

VS YQ surcharge (YQ) £234.00

VS YQ surcharge (YQ) £5.00

United Kingdom Air Passengers Duty (GB) £83.00

United Kingdom Passenger Service Charge (UB) £12.27

Mexican Airport Departure Tax (XD) £18.90

Mexican Tourist Tax (UK) £15.30

...but the Thompson website backs up the higher amount. Why are they so different?

It's probably due to the pound dropping in value last week.

We were informed by the Thomson rep at our hotel this morning that the departure tax is £45 if paying in sterling.

The money is collected by a representative of the tour company not a government employee - so they can charge what they want. I think they are making a bit extra out of it because, as mentioned previously, the Mexican taxes are not as high as 800 pesos/£50.

This is the biggest rip off going.

If you are booking a holiday to Mexico, price it up here first and factor in the exit tax of £200 for a family of four:

www.thomsonworldwide.com

You will more than likely get it cheaper and also get to fly VA or BA, which is a far superior experience.

I returned from Cancun to Glasgow on 8th July with Thomson and the exit tax was 800 pesos per person.

Got back from Cancun mid-August 2013 and was shocked at the departure tax, when traveling with Thomas Cook. The Thomas Cook shop we booked our holiday with did tell us there would be a departure tax, but no one knew for sure what it was, but said it would be between £35-£45 for the family of 4 in total. I was therefore surprised to receive a 'Welcome to Mexico' sheet of paper on the coach from the airport to the hotel advising us that the cost is actually 820 pesos each, which at the exchange rate I got made it £44.57 each, or £178.26 for all of us. What a rip off! This applies to children as well as adults and they ask for the money at the Thomas Cook check in at Cancun airport. No receipt given and you have to pay in cash. Given the variance in what we were told and what you have to pay, combined with other airlines not making the charge, it sounds like a scam to me.

" combined with other airlines not making the charge"

EVERYONE pays this tax Graham, it's just that most other airlines INCLUDE it in the price of the ticket.

There must be hundreds, if not thousands, of posts on here about the departure tax from Mexico.

Isn't it a pity that people only come on here after they've discovered what it is when they are in Mexico instead of ridiculous statements about it being a scam after they've returned home.
