I'm assuming that you are staying on the Riviera Maya (Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos, Puerto Aventuras, Akumal, Cozumel or Tulum) so it will make a difference how much riding in the car your kids can handle. Will they settle in and nap or look out the window, or will they be anxious to reach the destination? Tulum is a couple of hours south of Cancun, whereas Chichen Itza is an hour or two further away. Tulum is open and sunny with awesome views of the ocean and great for photo ops. There is a small beach where you can swim and near the entrance with the gift shops, there are the Papantla Fliers who put on a good show. Chichen Itza is a larger and more shaded area with many more restored buildings. About 40 minutes from Tulum is Coba. That is an option as well. It is a more jungle experience with bicycles or tricyclos to rent. You can still climb the pyramid at Coba.

Wherever you choose to go, the kids will be seeing things that they can't see at home, so it will be educational. If you choose to go to Chichen Itza, the road through Tulum, Coba, and Valladolid is much more interesting than the cuota (toll road). It takes a bit longer, but you see so much more. Watch out for the topes/speed bumps. The small villages all have three or four of them to slow down the traffic and keep their kids safe.

The ruins at Chichen Itza are much more impressive than Tulum, but it's a bit of a drive and a lot of walking around in heat and humidity. With young kids, you might want to give them just the taste of Mayan ruins that's available at Tulum, with a nice breeze and a dip in the ocean to beat the heat. If it was just adults, I'd say Chichen.

I agree with Mexigringa, the old road will be more interesting. Depending on the ages of the kids of course, I would say that Coba is probably the most appealing for kids, it's mostly hands on while Tulum is mostly roped off. Of course if they're napping in strollers or backpacks then Tulum is more walkable for you. Whichever you choose, do hire a guide there to make sense of what you're seeing and really much, much more interesting.
