where to stay cheaper + beach access for 4 people?

Hello there! I am looking to travel to Cozumel in January and we are pinning down a place to stay. Two of us are looking to do a little diving and it sounds like we could really get to the dive ops from anywhere (we are looking at Scuba Tony). The other two in our group honestly just prefer to sit by the beach etc for some R&R.

I know that there are hotels with hotel beaches but all of these are kind of out of our budget. We are looking to spend about $50/head/night for 4 nights (or cheaper). We would be fine staying outside of town as long as we can get to beaches. Should we try to find a hotel with its own beach, or just aim to stay somewhere cheap and taxi to the various beach clubs? What are the fees like for just wanting to stay and get a few drinks by a sandy beach, or just wanting to go snorkeling for the day at a different one? Not sure if we should just raise our budget for a hotel with its own beach if we are just gonna be looking at fees every time we go anywhere from a cheaper place.

We were also looking into various airbnbs but our top choice was just booked out from under us so I am exploring the options! We were originally looking at an airbnb with its own beach access + another airbnb that is a short walk away from the Chankanaab Marine Park. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance!!

I have stayed at Hippie Bobs condo listed through VRBO. I really enjoyed it.

Depending on when you are traveling, the prices of accommodation will change. Resedencias Reef has nice two bedrooms that may meet your budget in low season, and a decent beach for hanging out, but not as many restaurants. You may need taxi or car to get to town. In town, las Ventanas is a condo complex with only 3 br options that is quite reasonable, but no beach access. This does however give you the freedom to taxi around and try different beach clubs. Many clubs have good snorkeling and are free as long as you buy food. At night can then walk into town.

Residencias Reef to the south. Some of the nicest beach on the island. Close to diving. The downside is it is a long cab ride to town. On the north end, Las Brisas. One of the only sandy beaches to the north and closer to town. The downside is a long boat ride to diving.

Yeah, probably best to stay in town getting 2 room even. That could be less than your budget! Then 75 pesos per taxi within town or up to Coral Princess to use their manmade beach & pool for free if you're eating/drinking there. Or slightly more if hitting a south beach club with admission (some) and higher food prices. At least you'll be in town walking distance to tons of great inexpensive restaurants and shopping.

There are some smaller condos in the north end that might fit your budget. Miramar, Condumel and Suites Turquesa. The snorkeling is great in this area and it is $5 or less for a cab ride into town, so renting a car is not always needed.

For dive options, you have Aldora, Pepe’s Scuba and Blue Dreams that operate in the area and you can walk to. Plus any dive op that runs out of Puerto Abrigo.

In town, maybe Guidos Bouitique Suites. It is right on the water/Malecon but doesn’t have a pool. It is within walking distance to everything.
