How to get to Punta Sur Lighthouse?

After reading the topic below about the lighthouse, I realized as many times as we have been to Cozumel, we have never been to the lighthouse!! We are thinking about renting a car while in Cozumel. Can we drive out there and once there, what can we do - snorkle, climb the lighthouse? Thanks for any information. We will be in Cozumel the end of July.

The southern lighthouse is Faro Celerain and is within the ecological reserve of that name. It's along the main road and there's a big sign. There is an admission fee which includes transportation within the park, tour of the lighthouse and nautical museum, boat tour with naturalist-guide at Colombia lagoon, a beautiful sandy beach with offshore snorkel reef, a crocodile viewing area and several towers that serve as scenic overlooks. There's also a small Mayan temple near the lighthouse.

By July, there should be some sandy areas that are closed off by hurricane fencing. These are sea turtle nests.

We drove our rental out there last week. Totally worth the drive, but the drive is tedious on the crummy road. Be sure and stop and see the crocs, then climb the light house, then drive down to the beach.

A guy took us out to the reef in a 3 person kayak and it was wonderful snorkeling.

Unfortunately, the folks at the gate know absolutely nothing about the Cozumel Parks seven-day pass for $35.00 US which covers Punta Sur admission, Chankanaab Park, Discover Mexico and Del Museo. We bought our pass at Chankanaab (you have to ask, it is not listed on their Web site or at the entrance to the park).

But, at least it is only $10.00 US to enter Punta Sur. You reach the lighthouse after two miles of bad road. Another two miles of bad road gets you to the beach area where the snorkeling is great out at the reef.

The funny thing about this Chankanaab "eco-park" is the fact that the new wrist bands you are required to wear are all defective and falling off the snorkelers and can be seen littering the whole park, bobbing in the water. I talked to the man at the gate and apparently they know there is a problem.

I told them the same thing after experiencing the same thing with the wristbands last month Mal_Perro.

I know the road circles Cozumel. So if we drive out there, do we just get in our car and drive till we see a sign or what should be look for? TIA

It is at the southern tip of the island. Right near the Rasta/BobMarley/Paradise Bar. You will definitely see a big sign.

Indeed, take the road south of town(Melgar) until you hit the Rasta Bar. It will be the very first thing you hit after a long stretch of nothing but jungle and the first time you will see the sea.get off the main road here and head past the bar. The entrance is directly next to the bar....

It's at C54 on the Map...

Here's a map I roughed up for now...

The drive from the lighthouse to the beach pavilion and snorkeling area is a 'stop-the-car' postcard photo op every 50 yards.

Unless things have changed you'll know it's time to turn off of the main road because there's a stop sign where the new road ends & joins up with the old road. This assumes that you've come on the new road heading south from town, or 1 of the resorts in the southern hotel zone. At the stop sign you will have to make a very sharp turn to the right, probable about 130 degrees or so. Once you turn right the entrance to the park is easily found by driving past the 2 bars located there.

Good info cicopo! Despite that, people have been known to blow right past there and get well up the coast before figuring out that they missed it. As previously pointed out, if the ocean suddenly appears on your right, then you've missed the turn.
