1st trip to Cozumel, here is a quick run down:
Park Royal Cozumel Hotel:
-Nice rooms, what you expect from a typical Mexican resort hotel.
-Service staff is great at pools, bars and restaurants.
-Swim up bar at all pools.
-Snorkeling is great, can see fish just a few steps in. Bring your scuba mask (I think you can rent one onsite too).
-Beach is tiny. Not an issue for me but very small man-made beach cove.
-The buffet restaurant is decent, depends on lunch or dinner. You can find stuff to fill up on. They have real soda too, not water down tasting.
-The Mexican restaurant is decent too. Get there early enough to try different things on the menu. Service is so/so though.
-No internet access in rooms, have to go to lobby area.
-They charge $2/day for use of safe, also have a gym usage fee per day.
-No alarm clock in room (if you need a clock).
-They water down their beer and alcohol. You can do shot after shot and can't feel a thing. The beer is horrible, supposedly Dos Equis, but tastes really water down. The Jack Daniels and Appleton brands are lousy tasting too. I even asked the managers and bartenders and got no straight reply. Tequila and other straight shots have no strong taste to them. You are better off either staying at a nicer hotel or bringing in your own alcohol. You can buy from grocery store walking distance from hotel.
-Mosquitoes - I was shocked by the number of mosquitoes in July. You never see that in Cancun. The stores sell out off Off and Deep too, so bring plenty. After dark or on any jungle excursion, you will be eatin alive!
-Airport transportation is a ripoff, even if you are going just a few miles. $10 to $12 per person is fixed price for shuttles, you can't get a cab outbound (City bans taxis from picking up from airport). You better off prearranging (or getting a rental ahead of time for big groups) because all the shuttles collaborate on price and you are stuck paying whatever they all ask.
-Mosquitoes. The whole island is like a jungle and in July it rains so tons of mosquitoes out. I won't go back because compared to Cancun, this can ruin your trip.
