Festival of El Cedral?

I read about this on Wikipedia and it supposedly happens every year at the end of April or beginning of May? Can anyone tell me when it is this year, and what exactly it entails, and where? Sounds like it might be a good way to mingle with the locals, which I love to do!

Dates are Apr 24th - May 3rd. Went last year and had a blast. Yes you get to experience it all. Like a home town carnival. Local school girls singing in native dress to bull fights, food etc. Gets real busy late afternoons and evenings. One road in so traffic can back up.

Lots of small street vendors. Some of the large stores in town set up to sell to the locals. We brought some boots that were less than half price from what they were selling for in town. Even when we went to the store in town because they didn't have the size we wanted at the festival we couldn't get the lower price.

Some more info. We plan on going on opening day this year because the info booths have the whole schedule for the event. This way we can pick when we want to go there. We went 4 time last year. Last year we got lost trying to back to the main road in our rental car. Stopped and asked one of the many police cars and he said follow him and he lead us out. Personnal escort - can't get any better than that.

During the festival don't expect the normal night life in town. There is none. All the locals are at the festival.

Its my favorite local event and one of the islands most popular. Not only do local school girls dance but they bring in dancing groups from all over the region in the local costumes. Really great to watch.

I never drive because the traffic is bad. Sometimes I ride with friends who have access to the center because they have a house there and sell food. But mostly, I use the frequent bus service the city provides to Cedral from Chedraui. The price is low and the service is frequent.

I went last year for the first time and loved it for all the reasons mentioned previously. Definitely my favorite local event even better then Carnaval.

Definitely my favorite. I dont know attendance figures but it may be more popular with the locals than Carnaval. Only in recent years has it become a bit discovered by the tourists. But still, much a local event.

Not sure if it was because it was my first one and I have been to 10 Carnavals but I really enjoyed the music, the pageantry and the carnival atmosphere.

" but I really enjoyed the music, the pageantry and the carnival atmosphere."

I agree. Its really an authentic local event with much culture and pagentry. Not the elaborate costumes of Carnival but authentic local and regional dress. And in my opinion, more opportunity to really sample local food. Here, many locals, such as my friends, set up little restaurants and cook up some of their best home cooking.

I can smell it and taste it now!
