Big Plans for Center

This type of project has long been talked about but more and more details are coming out. And the mayor says he will get it done before his term ends---and as soon as he can line up funding. He does have the governor on his side, who is a Cozumel native.

Here , translated from El Semanario, is how the plans are described:

¨ this project will take place in the area north of the pier, ranging from the monument to the presidential palace (Quinta Maya), whose basic concepts are summarized in preliminary work, reorganization of roads and vehicular stream, boardwalk, bike path, beach area, lighting, sanitary sewer, storm sewer and underground mains.

Within the project, envisaged reduce from four to two lanes the roadways located on the west side, next to the pier,, lanes will be 4.2 meters wide each, divided by a median of 1.5 meters.

The recreation and family living areas are attractively designed to tourism as the walkers left the sea side which currently consist of two meters wide, will be expanded to about eight feet, and will be monuments, an outdoor gym, benches, light poles, metal trash cans and bike path area.¨ And, they are looking for sources for sand to widen and repair the beaches.

I hope something can be done. So much has been taken from the locals and they now have little public area available for their use.

We will wait and see.

I'm hoping they get to the beach restoration along the malecon. That's been in the works since 2009.

Several of my Mexican friends are hopeful it will happen and think it might because its this mayors pet project and it would be a plus for him if he can get it done before the end of his term. Like the others, he likely has future political ambitions and this cant hurt him with the voters.

The beach restoration along the malecon would be great both for the locals and it would be a much more attractive sight for the visitors to see. I remember years ago when sand was there and it was much more attractive.
