Heads up on debit/credit card number theft

Heads up! On our recent trip to Mexico my wife used her debit card in the ATM on Calle 5 sur (5th street south) just off the main Avenue(G.R.E. Melgar Avenue) on the Island of Cozumel. Her card number was stolen and two withdrawls for $500 were made from that ATM(after we had returned home).

There are two non-bank ATMs freestanding on the sidewalk -- without security enclosures -- near that corner, both on Calle 5. One is a Cashola machine & I forget what the other one says other than ATM. Use common sense and keep your ATM card in your pocket when you see machines like these!

Good advice. No matter where you are, if it is not a bank ATM, avoid it.

Unfortunately salty dog those standalone ATM's get you one way or the other. If they don't steal your card number, the fees they charge are riducous. Know a guy that used one and was charged $60US in fees for withdrawing $300US. I always go to chedarui or mega, but there have been reports of numbers being swiped there also.

Are these the ATMs with "Cashola" written on the side? If they are, then, come on now, what are you thinking? "Cashola", really?

Well said Salty - some people never realize that not everyone is accustomed to foreign countries and what to look out for, I am sure your post will be read by others and they will find it helpful.
