Cozumel Rental Car

Hi. My husband and i are going to cozumel in two weeks. We are debating about adding on the transports that run $90 round trip or just renting a car. We are thinking car becuase then he can do a couple night dives with the company he prefers, which does not do boat pick ups for the night dives, so he has to get into the town for the take off time. otherwise he will be forced to take a taxi for the dive or dive with the hotel instead.

My question is this- we have read some pretty bad cautions about renting a car in cozumel- that the company (even a big name like hertz) will say they don't have any cars left. or they force you to get super expensive insurance which doubles or triples the cost. Is there anyone out there that has personally rented a car and can tell us of their experience? i want to know if these cautions are real or if that is just the 10% of the time situation.

advice?

The best your VISA coverage will be is for reimbursement after you return to the States. I believe only AmEx will provide coverage with an addition fee, specialized card for collision. Rental cars are not cheap and insurance is especially expensive, particularly if you choose no deductible.

No American "brand name" has any more affiliation with corporate other than to rent use of their name and reservation system. You are in Mexico and the differences are not always that obvious.

We rented through ISIS and the experience was not so good. We discovered after dark that the headlights didn't work. There was no pad on the brake pedal or clutch, just a small piece of metal which my foot kept slipping off. When my wife took the car back to exchange it, after having to drive home without lights, Margarita insisted that my wife pay for a scratch in the car that we cannot for the life of us see how we could have put there. She really upset my wife about that, and it wasn't until I got on the phone and said how much are we talking about that she said, "oh maybe $25." The implication had been that it would have been more. Margarita pretty much shrugged off having given us a dangerous car.

I don't doubt that there are less scrupulous or otherwise worse rental places in Cozumel, but I also think ISIS has a pretty dedicated Internet fan club willing to overlook ISIS' problems. People at our hotel paid $40 for cars with air conditioning and auto transmission, and had no problems with them. We paid $30 for a dangerous rustbucket. Next time we'll be going with the hotel.
