First IM trip Sept 27-Oct 5th, any advice, any others going

Going with girlfriend and we're just looking for helpful advice? Plenty of time for daily excursions, reasonable budget...Will be doing plenty of drinking (vacation right) so looking for decent night spots..Staying at Privilege and doing the AI, after reading the reviews maybe not the best choice but for only $230 per person for 9 days figured what the heck

Fist off, get a IM map from Laura (http://www.cancunmap.com/islamujeres-map.html). It's well worth the money/effort and will save you much time and grief when on the island. As for dining and nightlife, stroll Hidalgo Avenue and follow your nose (food) and ears (music, dancing, and nightlife). As for daytime activities, rent a golf cart for a day or two and check out the island. While folks preferences differ greatly, ours include stops at the Turtle Farm and spending time at the southern lighthouse area. Good conch shell hunting can be had about 3/4 mile up from the lighthouse on the eastern coast. If you want to get a good feel for the island on a more personal level, the IM animal shelter (http://islaanimals.org/), Little Yellow Schoolhouse (http://littleyellowschoolhouse.org/), and La Gloria English School (http://www.folges.org/) are good stops.

Crime on the island is next to non-existant, probably due in large part to the Mexican military base located there. However, as with traveling anywhere, use common sense and be aware of your surroundings. The only thing we've seen in all the times on the island is the occassional drunk or two. Have a great and safe trip and plase let us know how it went upon your return. :)

Take an early morning run/walk up the Caribbean side of the Island and watch the sunrise, and catch sunset in the evening from the beach at Privilege.

Get your Mapchick map now, you'll have lots fun planning activities based off it.

Have Fun!

Rent a golf cart on either Sunday (ribs) or Wednesday (wings) and go to the Soggy Peso (on the west side of the island) on Medina along the airport strip. There is a couple from Texas, Mal and Sal, that own it. It's a palapa-Jimmy Buffett-style bar that has the coldest beer, great margaritas and probably the most fun bartenders on the island. If you get there by 12:30 or so, you should be fine. We spent a few afternoons there in the past two visits. It's a very fun experience and really good Texas ribs and wings.

Check out the Top Questions on the upper right hand side, especially the "Must do" activities while on Isla one.

I agree with above posters on renting a golf cart and touring the island. It's a lot of fun and you get to see how and where the locals live as well as some stunning views on the Caribbean side and Punta Sur.

For night life there are many options. Adelita's on Hidalgo is a great tequila (and other things too) bar with a huge selection. You can sample several before making a choice. Very cool place and right next door to Fayne's where you can also hang out and listen to music, dance, etc. We prefer to stay at Adelita's and listen to the music from there.

Another, really chill place is the OM bar on Matamoros. Great sushi as well drinks and good music. Upstairs is very cool but careful on the way down the spiral staircase after several drinks, lol.

La Luna nightclub has music, food, dancing, etc. It's on Guerrero near the main square. Great patio overlooking the Caribbean. Nitrox is another nightclub on Matamoros near Guerrero, open only on weekends.

Thanks for the heads up on the map, all the night spots to hit, looks like the golf cart is a must do for a couple days and good to know crime is extremely low...Thanks for all the helpful advice KT, Harley, Rocker and NY, just wish I could have discovered this website 3-4 years ago!!

The first responders did a good job getting you started. Because I am a visual learner, I enjoy the photos on this site:

http://www.myislamujeres.com/home.asp

The Isla Q&A Board and Chatter Board are especially helpful.

Once you arrive on Isla, see how long it takes to forget what day it is. The best thing about Isla is its people, so look for ways to get off the tourist path...maybe by attending night soccer or basketball or baseball games?

Two tips for the tourist path (also fun): 1) try the pomegranate margaritas at Miguel's Moonlight--they are made with pomegranate teqilla, not a pom mix, Dos por uno time is often whenever you inquire about it. And 2) check out the purple store on the oceanside of the square. Good place to buy silver, or Tallavera, or Huichol bead art. There are scads of places to eat, here is a partial list: http://www.hollyeats.com/IslaMujeres.htm

Often the best places are inexpensive. Is it too late to change the PA reservation from all inclusive?

This is all very helpful info...We're heading to Isla on Oct 2! Def renting a golf cart and driving around to all the local beach bars.

Actually, you won't need a golf cart for the beach bars at all :) Just start out at Caribbean Queen next door to Privilege Aluxes, then head one over to Sergio's Playa Sol, then to Chi Chi Charleys, Sunset Grill, and finish off at Buho's. All along the beach and within a few minutes of each other.

DrGeo:

I will definitely be hoisting a pomegranate margarita in your honor at Miguel's next week!
