Day trips off Isla Mujeres

We are sailing to Isla next week. We want to take a day an rent a car and go down towards Tulum. It has been years since we have been there and I am sure things have changed a lot. We have driven to Isla Mujeres 3 time from Indiana back in the 80's.

So do we want to take the ferry to the mainland and rent a car there? Is there more that one ferry? I really want to avoid as much of Cancun as possible.

Why not go to Tulum first, then go to Isla afterwards? This way you could rent a car at the airport, go to Tulum, return the car, and hop a cab or car service over to the Gran Puerto ferry docks. Regardless of how you do it it's a long drive for a day trip. Count on at least 2 hours there and back. Would you consider spending the night in Tulum?

There are two ferries, but the majority of people take the Ultramar ferry from the Gran Puerto docks in Puerto Juarez. The older, somewhat slower ferries leave from the Puerto Juarez dock just a few minutes from the GP one.

We are arriving in Isla by sailboat, not by plane. We just had an extra day and thought it would be a nice day trip.

Duh, that's right. You said that. My reading comprehension skills could use some improvment.

The rest of the post still stands. Take the ferry to Gran Puerto and rent a car on the mainland. Count on about a two hour drive to Tulum.
