Pinguino or Cafe de Mar for romantic dinner

We will be staying our first night at Posada del Mar, so either restaurant is convenient. I understand that Pinguino has got better of late. Also are both open every day? Our first night on Isla will be my wife's birthday so I would like something special but casual and not exorbitantly expensive.

For a dinner at the restaurant itself I think Café del Mar would be the more romantic option but if you're talking about setting up a special private dinner for two on the beach then either one would be perfect.

I agree with TNY: Cafe del Mar is sexy, tropical and romantic. We like Pinguino's, too - especially for breakfast when we stay at Posada del Mar (nice, conservative, more Mayan influenced.) Pinguinos would be less pesos, but no romantic tropical beach club vibe. For a special occasion, I'd def spring for Cafe del Mar.

Another vote for Cafe de Mar. Much better setting and food. We haven't tried Pinguino since they changed their menu, but the bar area is nice and Romy behind the bar is very welcoming. Enjoy your trip.

we had the Most Amazing romantic dinner at Penquino's.! They set up a table for us on the sand & it had flowers & palm leaves arranged decoratively...Very Nice. We ordered the seafood dinner for two..it was so excellent. I have a great photo but dunno how to post it here...It's here on my blog..http://aboutislamujeres.blogspot.mx/2013/05/new-ferry-terminal-at-25-facility-for.html

Well......the good news is that Ruben is back at the Posada/Pinguinos again. The not-so-good news is that the kitchen closes at 8:30pm Wednesday though Sunday (3pm Monday and Tuesday) so it would have to be an early dinner.

Thanks all. Cafe del Mar it will be then. Reservations needed midweek?

Not looking for the special treatment, just a nice (preferably outdoor) dining experience.

I too would vote for Café del Mar but really you are a but a short walking distance to Olivia & another 5 minutes from Los Fueguitos, our two favorite places for special occasions. Both are reasonably priced & have great quality food. Olivia is a garden setting & Los Fueguitos you can eat under the moon along the water. Have a wonderful time on the Island celebrating your wife's birthday!

I don't think you'd need reservations midweek. The restaurant is outdoors and has music. Try to go on a night Jesus Campuzano is playing. He's wonderful.

ETA: I'm talking about Café del Mar, btw :)

I will definitely check out Los Fueguitos but on our previous visit to Isla we visited Olivia and neither of us could understand what all the fuss is about - very much a letdown.

I ate dinner at Cafe del Mar in May and my filet mignon in Roquefort sauce was wonderful. My friend however ordered the ribeye and as soon as it was delivered I could see it was going to be a problem as it was cut VERY thin, no good way to control the doneness of it easily. They did not charge us for it though.

I ate breakfast twice and snacks (guac and shrimp ceviche) once at Pinguinos. It was good except the second morning when I asked for eggs over easy the waiter did not know what I was talking about.
