Just back from playa longish trip report on the royal

well vacation is over... oh well. stayed at the Royal PDC, our room was great! we had 299 and it was a close to ocean front as it could be for the ocean view rooms. room was large. the balcony was smaller than the other rooms so no hammock but it really really was not important. we had the ocean view, pool view and could watch all the fun at the bar. the walk to the beach was about 45 seconds, ditto for the pool (this room is essentially above where you get the towels....)

there was some towel game going on, i participated but did set up read on the beach for a while and then went to breakfast...but there was clearly plenty of space for folks as most beach beds and shade pergolas were still available at 10 am....

It was clear that some of the employees were putting towels down for others and when questioned by other guests they played dumb....

pool too chilly for me we stuck to the beach which was very healthy in size no worries folks. some rocks but IMO they were negligible in annoyance factor. plenty of sand on the north of end of the royal's beach

we thought the food was just fine. really good breakfasts at spices and the servers were top notch folks

pelicanos service fair to very poor everyone looked busy but you couldn't get your meal or drinks without asking a few times and it was sort of right

tapas a little better than pelicanos

Marie maria great service very good food

chef's plate, food good , not great, service excellent

asiana we really like asiana i know not everyone does, food great, service great, dessert was the only real disappointment here

FYI all the food service people are hoping for tips and we accomodated them...

bring small bills with you, i brought about 30 singles and it wasn't really enough for a week. got pesos but its hard to get the 20 peso bills or the 10 peso coins.....

fyi - beach flag system, just something for the royal web site, didn't work, and it only where the beds are not just anywhere on the beach.

beach waitresses hard to find from time to time and tipping didn't affect service with them. expect a drink to take about 20 minutes at a minimum.

beach butler came around only 1 time a day with face towels

beach butler came around only every other day (or so it seemed) with fruit - it was always sugared grapes

towels, an endless supply! for the beach that is, don't expect washcloths in your rooms all the time....

we had very sketchy room service, always clean but supplies including linens were very uneven. i think it depended on who did the room, clearly not the same person our whole stay, and we got a swan and a bunny!

turndown service was very good.

highest marks to Francisco our concierge. we realized very quickly that you went to him to get someting done NEVER the front desk. they were really worthless, also room service, - when we set it up got nothing, with Francisco delivered on the dot....

we had a lot of problems with the hot water, the front desk was not responsive here. Francisco really came thru

early morning coffee a little difficult, the coffe set up in the main lobby gets empty and no one pays attention, 24 hour room much more reliable.

location to 5th ave excellent

we took side trip to chitchen itza don't go with olympic not because they are bad but their trip includes a side trip to a cenote that was not anything great and it just left you with less time at chitchen. there is a lot of native shopping there and you will want some shopping time, it is way cheaper here than 5th ave. and you must bargain.

i would go back to this resort but usually don't repeat beach locations....time to start search for next years trip!

Hello!

Did you happen to see any weddings or talk to anyone who got married there? We will book our wedding soon and have narrowed it down to 2 resorts...the Royal being one of them!

Any opinions are greatly appreciated!

there were 3 weddings while we were there. our concierge told us they had 41 weddings in october! so they must be doing something right.

they have a gazebo for weddings but guests sit in the court yard, not covered (so rain could be an issue)

another couple got married directly on the beach. decorations were simple but beautiful. the gazebo is at the edge of the ocean and is at the end of a grassy patio area between two of the room bldgs.

they have sound system you can also have your reception outside they have a movable dance floor if you want it...

at the one wedding; the morning after the bride and groom were dressed up again and had a photoshoot in the ocean (her wedding dress held up pretty good!) The staff works very hard to make things right for everyone at the royal. it can't hurt to reach out with questions. hope this helps
