How far from Playa Del Carman to a border town in Belize where I can just run across the border to buy some trinkets. Are the roads very good or should I rent a jeep.
I think it looks easier on the map than it actually is. Gave it a few thoughts myself. Please post if you do it. TY LIG ITS.
It is at least a four to four and one half hour drive and I would most certainly get a four wheel drive. The highway is okay south of Tulum but we have not driven too much further south than that. We have friends that go to Belize twice a year and they love it, you may want to plan on overnight if you drive down.
Agree, no need for a jeep and 4 to 5 hours away--the capital of Quntana Roo, Chetumal is on the border. Nothing much to see but locals cross into what is called the Free Zone in Belize to do their shopping. A huge area with some bargains and lots of junk. Also a couple of junky casinos there.
I was told it's a four and a half hour bus ride from PDC to Chetumal and then you take a taxi across to Corozal which is the closest city in Belize. Long way to go for some trinkets.
No reason to go to Corazol for trinkets. As I said, the Free Zone of Belize is adjacent to Chetumal and a quick trip. Chetumal is an interesting city also.
If we can get an airfare deal to Cancun, we'll fly in there and take the bus to get to Belize. The northern border city in Belize, Corozal, doesn't have a whole lot of interest for tourists. There aren't any beaches, although there are some nice small hotels along the bay.
I sure wouldn't do this as a day trip. Also, very few car rental companies will allow you to take your car across the border. The roads is fine, a regular two lane highway. In Belize, it's blacktop, but not really a highway.
