Renting a car

Does anyone know how much it is approximately? Would you recommend it? (is it safe)? We may drive to the Tulums (from Riu Palace) or Cancun one or two days.

Thanks!

I rented the cheapest car I could get from Budget for 3 days in PDC in November and it was ~$110 usd.

If I were you, but then I am not, I would take some advice from Grayhound and leave the driving to a bus driver. The buses to both Tulum and Cancun are quite nice, air conditioned, comfortable and have TV.

Take a cab from you hotel to downtown Playa and have the driver drop you at 10th Ave and Ave Juarez - or better down Juarez to 5th Ave.

For Tulum, you will have to take another cab to the ruins (I presume this is your objective) from Tulum pueblo. The cost is between 28 and 47 pesos (2 to 4 dollars US).

The bus will take you to central Cancun. If you want, take a taxi to the tourist/hotel zone. The cost is 36 to 56 pesos (2.5 to 5 dollars US).

Just returned from PDC a couple days ago. The driving and roads are really not as harrowing as people would lead you to believe. Just be a conscientious driver and you'll be fine. We really enjoyed having the freedom and flexibility to roam as we desired; and by the time you add up any potential taxi and bus costs, you may as well have your own car to explore whenever you want. We rented from Thrifty for 4 days (with the FULL insurance coverage costs included in this price) for approx 180 USD. Had no problem with them whatsoever. Budget seems really good also; both have competitve prices...try to find an online coupon code to help out with the cost.
