Coco Bongo's--is it worth it?

Read mixed reviews throughout the forums. Not sure if I really want to go out at 11:30 at night, but if it's really great, I'll take a siesta beforehand....any thoughts?

I loved it..went in October 09 and they had all this neat Halloween skits in their show...if you go with the hotel (most hotels in Playa sponsor excursions--50 dollars gets you in, open bar until 3am, your own section and rides to and from), you get a better deal--if you go on your own, it's 50 dollars to just get in the door with open bar.. I went with the staff from the iberostar Tucan. Basically it's a good sized club..they have skits (lots of lipsynching or some sort of choreographed dance routine) in between house music with dancing. Lots of acrobatics and aerial stuff goes on too.. The in house band is actually very good. I say give it a shot. The Wednesday night shows are a lot less crowded than the weekend shows.

If you like cheap booze and being around drunks then you will love it. If you like crappy techno music then you will love it. Personally I can think of a 100 better ways to spend a evening in Cancun then being inside of that zoo.

We just got back yesterday and were debating whether or not to go. We talked to a lady at our pool told us she went the night before and loved it! But, she also told us they pat you down three times before you get in and you have to be escorted to the bathroom! That freaked my husband out. He said if you have to be patted down and escorted to the bathroom, is it even safe? :) So, we saved the $50 and still had a great time!

They pat you down 3 times and escort you to the bathroom??? I've never heard of that before. I've been to the Coco Bongo in Cancun several times and loved it. Will be in PDC later this month and hope to go to their Coco Bongo. That story sounds kind of strange to me. Not sure if I completely believe it. I'm thinking they may have some kind of metal detectors at the door, but I doubt that there is much else.

I felt the same way! I told him I read about it online and that no one had mentioned that, but he still didn't want to risk it! Next time, I'm going to have him read up on it before hand before we go and then he'll feel more comfortable!

I think maybe the lady at the pool was exaggerating or something.

I'm glad you had a good vacation though! Did you go to any other clubs that you would recommend? I'm headed down that way in a couple weeks and still trying to figure out what I'll be doing.

It was awhile ago but we went to Coco Bongo Cancun late December 08. We were a group of 7 - 30 somethings. We got a private table with liquor service through one of the tour guys at our hotel. I would absolutely recommend getting a private table coz it was, indeed, a zoo and for me it was invaluable to have a "home base" as I don't really enjoy being in the throngs of large drunk crowds. We pretty much just hung out at our table, enjoyed our drinks, and watched the action. We all thought the performances were highly entertaining and quite spectacular! We all loved it.

Love it! It's amazing! We've been to the one in Cancun about 5X and the one in Playa 2x now. I feel it is definately worth the money. We tip our waiter about $10 or $15 right away and the drinks never stop! We've had exceptional service at Coco Bongo's.

The shows are fantastic and very entertaining. They are pretty much nonstop all night. Not a dance bar so much as a show.

As for being patted down, the guys get a little bit of the action, but I have never been. I've also never been escorted to the bathroom. Oh wait! Once, one of the very handsome guys from the show was walking past me and could tell I was heading to the bathroom - we linked arms and he showed me where it was. Never got the feeling it's not a safe place. Crowded, yes.

I HIGHLY recommend it!

Well when I was at the Playa Del Carmen CoCoBongos, I was not patted down 3 times nor was I escorted to the bathroom. They looked inside my purse as I went in and that was it. Methinks someone exaggerated a bit much on their review. NOw the comment from Surfsoandso about being around drunks really depends on where you sit and when you go..and to be honest, you're going to be around drunks just sitting at your hotel. The location in Playa Del Carmen is much smaller than the one in Cancun, which I think makes a huge difference.

I recommend going with the hotel staff if they sponsor an excursion because you get your own little spot off of the floor.

We went to the one in Cancun and I still fail to see what the fuss is about. We were 22 and 23 at the time and felt too old; everyone was young, inexperienced and off their faces. The show was OK but very repetitive and somewhat lack lustre with average dancing; it would have been nice to see some live singing and music. I've seen far better in Europe for far less.

If you do get VIP seating, if we hadn't been sat completely separate from everyone else I think we'd have lasted an hour tops.

That's just my opinion, I know some rate it and perhaps it depends on your expectations and experience with clubs; if you've never been to a club/show before then it's probably worth going for the experience, but if like me you've experienced that type of thing you may find it disappointing
