I would not change to travelers cheques, you better off changing to U.S.

dollar, it is widely accepted in Mexico.

If you travel with only the the money you may need to get there then use an ATM there in Mexico to Pesos you would be better off. If you are going to exchange your currency don't do it at the airport. If you exchange it in town you will get a much better rate. If you use USD to pay for goods and services you will get 10 pesos to 1 dollar. That is the worse exchange availible.

We are taking some US cash, BUT, only because we have booked airport transportation that is requesting payment in US. If we want to pay in pesos then the driver will convert it for us at the time of payment. Assuming it won't be a favorable exchange rate we will use our dollars.

However, for everything else there we have found there is no point in paying to exchange our country's currency into US Dollars, only to get 'hosed' again when using it to pay for things in Mexico. Also, if you pay (or tip) in US, then the person receiving it will have to exchange it and they lose as well.

The only one who gains by this is the bank/exchange folks.

We will use the local bank machine when we get to Playa since this gives the best rate and we don't have to travel with pockets full of cash.
