LIVE from Grand Velas Riviera Maya 5/8

OK, outline form.... arrived yesterday AM, top shelf everything, transport in new Lincoln Navigator, iced towels, iced drinks... very nice. Must be honest food to die for, WAY over the top.... lunch buffet at Azul simply magnificent, mostly glass180 degree view of the ocean, seafood galore, ceviche, lobster, everything under the sun, all just beautifully presented, wait staff all over us, very attentive.... flawless IMHO.

Dinner at Sen Lin, literally 2 minute A/C shuttle from main building, again flawless presentation and service, everything absolutely delicious, appetizers, soup, ribeye with oyster sauce, peking duck, amuse bouches, really very, very good, HUGE restaurant, tons of space between tables, very high ceilings, nice decor, two waiters for our table, very attentive, service way over the top. Chilean cabernet very nice.

Suite is out of sight, 3rd floor oceanfront overlooking adult pool, 1300 sq ft, warm plunge pool on veranda, extremely nice. Pool complex is big, main pool is simply huge, HUGE..... kids; there are a few kids, some young 3-4 yr olds, but to be perfectly candid, the pool is so large that we hardly could even see the other guest with or without kids, both pools have there own swim-up bar, both are infinity edge, really just fantastic, many staff around for food-drink orders and they get you set up at your chairs, no shortage of chairs, etc, they lay out your towel, bring water in ice buckets, very nice indeed, plenty of shade if wanted.

Walked on beach yesterday and went into the very clear water, like a cool bath, very nice.

Just had the breakfast buffet at Azul.... just like lunch yesterday, everything under the sun, extremely well presented, very nice service and attention to detail.

Sun shining brightly in the cloudless sky, hading back to the room for perhaps a short nappy poo before getting into that pool and another walk on this beautiful, breathtaking expanse of beach looking straight across at Cozumel and the cruise ships.

Note; completely different from all the other all inclusives, VERY quite, VERY sedate, VERY upscale..... another note, A/C is "ICEY" everywhere we go, our room, restaurants, etc, really very cool, dry and comfy..... used the down comforter last night.

Thanks for report. Do they have evening entertainment - or even an entertainment team? Enjoy your stay. Cheers! Margaret

Are there any outdoor bars to enjoy an after dinner drink??

Are there plenty of shaded areas on the beach??

Do you find the resort to be "too" quiet??

Enjoy your stay!!

Kimmy and Bridgey.... zero entertainment, zero entertainment team, it simply isn´t that kind of place. It is very quiet and peaceful everywhere and at both pools. Is it TOO quiet ? That´s very subjective, it´s definitely not a party scene of any kind, very upscale and sedate.... Ritz Carlton / Four Seasons-like but nicer ( IMHO ) and absolutley beautiful, great food and service. Plenty of shade everywhere, pool and beach ( large umbrellas ). There are several bars, piano bar, kareoke bar, Bistro Bar overlooking the adult pool, sky bar upstairs overlooking the view to Cozumel and tables outside the piano bar overlooking the pool and beach, plenty of places to chill in the evening with a drink and a view / breeze. Hate to keep using the same word "upscale" but my limited vocabulary is hamstringing me right now and that´s the one that comes to mind. Low occupancy right now, they tell us approx 30%, higher this coming Tuesday. Using their computer center which is conveniently located between our building and the pool complex so we stop in for emails here and there. Dashing to the main pool now, I hear the agua calling ! Oh yes, one more thing, the bathrooms, EVERYWHERE, are stunning, very nicely done, immaculate and very large with mucho facilities in each one.

Tingy ( or is it Monica ? ).... I don´t have any idea what you´re talking about.... or is it that we just can´t remember .......

However, there are no hot tubs here. Large wedding party ( 45 rooms ) here from Austin, Texas, beginning to stir things up at the humungous swim-up bar at the main pool.... we are trying to keep our heads.... but it´s very difficult !

Just a couple of tidbits about the room on this Mother´s Day morning.... full length of the suite electric shade goes up and down by remote, shower can fit "approximately" 20 people without touching and has a large window that opens giving an indoor outdoor experience, Kohler one piece quiet flush toilet with self closing seat, very nice his and hers slipper / sandals for the pool and a wicker beach bag, big walk-in closet very well appointed.

Have you tried a margarita from one of the carts where they squeeze the juices and fruits fresh? That sounds like a dream! Enjoy!

PS... regarding dinner last evening, nothing short of magnificent.... sorry again about all the superlative descriptions but they just seem to fit. Frieda´s Mexican.....way over the top ! They did everything but eat the food for us, decor and ambience.... a 10 ! On the 3rd floor, floor to ceiling and wall to wall glass with EVERY seat in the restaurant overlooking the lights of Cozumel..... tables on the balcony outside but nobody was out there, a bit warm and humid I suppose, but VERY comfy inside A/C was frosty and dry.... VERY comfy with all the humidity outside. High ceilings with beautiful marble and brickwork to the ceiling with a shimmering water feature across the rear of the room, just beautiful. Service was impeccable, three waiters at our table constantly and anxious to please, each addressed us by name everytime the came to the table, changing forks, plates, etc all the time. Wine and drink cart brought to the table. Amuse bouches, fantastic appetizers and dinner to die for, all of which we had never seen before and just gorgeous presentations of everything, no room for desert but of course that didn´t stop us from having it, all just phenominal, a really great experience, would rival any restaurant in Manhattan or Chicago ( in our humble opinion ), a guitar player / singer throughout the evening and she was excellent, received applause from the entire restaurant at each interval.

There was another wedding last evening anda spectacular feast on the beach on the sand, what a beautiful shindig thrown by the resort, just over the top again, we walked around the whole thing and it was just beautiful, flags flying in the ocean breeze, special lighting effects, band playing, dancing, eating, drinking.... all easilly viewed from our veranda, unusual for us but we after dinner we slipped into the warm plunge pool on our 3rd floor verand and watched the wedding party with the waves crashing just a few feet away, imbibed a couple of adult beverages at the same time.... simply magical.

Just had another one of those great meals at the breakfast buffet at Azul, directly on the beach, heading up to change and get to the pool, don´t want to miss any of that glorious sunshine and mingling.... BTW, all around the pool, ( which has a really unusual tileing job, not your standard light pool tile ) they have wave shaped / curling seating areas with a tiled table top in the center creating conversation areas while sitting in the pol looking over the infinity edge, realy very nice effect AND the swim-up bar is HUGE approx 50ft long and another one at the adults only pool.... which we have not felt the need to go to at all, the pool is so large that you need not even see or hear anyone else if you don´t want to. Later.......

Hi Stone & Beth

WOW this place sounds amazing!!! I know you are big fans of EPM & it is early days but how do the 2 compare? We were disappointed with our 2nd visit to EPM last year so are finding your posts really interesting - sounds like heaven!! Hope you enjoy the rest of your holiday.

Ok, knowing you and ourselves love EPM, I would like your opinion of how you think they compare.

I know you make reservations for the restaurants, and how difficult did you find that to do. Some reviews from high season suggest that you need to book weeks in advance.

On the smoking issue, I know Matt enjoys his cigars, any smoking restrictions in the outside areas?

Are there outdoor dining options? We enjoy that on vacation.

It sounds like you two are having a great time and cannot wait to hear of your comparisons of your week at EPM vs. GV.

Have a cocktail and stogie for us. We are eagerly waiting for our trip in September and may have to take a stroll on the beach and view the Velas for ourselves when we get to the PDC area.
