Airport driver tip

Driving from Cancun airport to Playa via private transport organized by the hotel we are staying at. We pay the hotel directly for this service. The driver meets us outside customs holding up a sign with hotel logo and our name. We have 2 suitcases and 2 carry-ons, 2 passengers. What would be a suitable tip for the driver?

$5 for the both of you would be expected. $10 and he may kiss your feet, and then you may never get rid of him:-)

We are staying at La Tortuga. I suspect the driver either works there at the hotel or they just hire him to make the airport run?

stevesing, also if you book a Riu through their website they arrange transportation, shared van but going only to Rius which are all in the same area, $18 for the roundtrip. That's for the 2 of us. The person we look for when we exit the airport building is wearing a Riu t-shirt.

Razbone, the transit company Hotel la Tortuga arranges charges about $110 round trip, very professional, very personal and very punctual. As a rule it will be a private transfer, but if someone else is heading to Hotel La Tortuga you may have company.

I don't go to Playa during the tropical storm season. I'm a January through end of May traveler to Playa. I also stay away from the major holidays because it's so crowded and expensive. It is less expensive from July thru Nov, but just take travel insurance in case the worst happens.

You are going to love Hotel la Tortuga, great place. Make sure you make it to El Bistro for a meal other than breakfast, what a great value.

We tip $20 each way (total, not each) for our private transfer and feel that's fair.

We've been using the same transport company for the last 7 trips. Always on time - airport & resort, very courteous drivers, clean vans, stops if we desire and most of all... We trust they are going be where we need them when we need them.

Our transfers are actually the most prompt, dependable & reliable part of our Mexican vacations!!!

Stevesing,

To answer your question, many hotels, as long as you book via their website/hotel directly, will offer private transfer - either for free or for a fee......some don't......not sure about the VIM but easy enough for you to check on their website....

$5 US is a suitable tip. However, I've tiped as much as $10 US if we made bathroom and/or beer stops along the way.
