The whales aren't stone--they are huge plastic sandbags.

Whales are all gone. Check out NUMEROUS threads regarding the beach restoration. The beach is fantastic!

Yes, beach is fantastic and you can now walk the beach right into Playa del Carmen. First stop: Senor Frogs.

We did that as well last August. It was almost as though the sandbags created a protected enclave for the fish. We fed them bread and cereal. It has changed greatly since then, and you will love the beach. We think that the fish love it as well.

You won't see nearly as many fish, if any. We had many vacations at the Rius before the sandbags were put in and you never saw any then.

If you walk up the beach past the hotels you will find a small rocky area - there are loads of fish there - throw some bread in and they go wild. There was also a couple of huge ones swimming around.
